I have taken my 8361A’s to the store to compare them to the Palmer’s Orbit 11 because I was considering switching to a 5.x or 7.x.x system. I am no longer considering - Genelec’s are simply superior in many ways:
- Genelec’s started clipping at 0dB while Palmers started clipping at -25dB. There’s a tremendous difference in power.
- Genelec’s have a wider soundstage
- Genelec’s are clearer to my ears (and couple of other ears)
- Genelec’s sound much more natural.
It seems that 1kW of power in Palmers is an overstatement.
That being said, Palmer’s are really good speakers, especially for the price. I don’t think anything comes close to them at this price point.
Please note that this is mostly a subjective comparison from me and couple of other people that were in the store.
Both systems were tested uncalibrated via RME ADI-2 DAC FS.
Wait a minute.
What are you comparing exactly?
I could see before any Data that the Genelec is Twice the size and Genelec is not Toy Company so by any logical thinking anyone would expect them
to be louder.
Then you mention „clipping at -25“ what does this have to do with Max Spl? This is like saying "my Amplifier distorts the speakers when i turn it to 5“
without context.
Then i looked at some tech data. I ran some quick calculations for the Genelec based on the dimensions they have on their Website.
It has 2 woofers with the Equivalent of around 360 square cm. So 720 square cm Cone area for bass and lower midrange.
Thats the surface area of a 12inch speaker cone.
The palmer has 2x8 inch woofers which in general are around 200 square cm each. So 400 square cm. That is 1,8 times less.
The Geneec enclosure is Huge. Of course it will be more sensitive.
Are you surprised it goes louder easier? Completely different Size categories
It is a bit like comparing two Superbike style motorbikes one with 600 cc and one that has an 1100cc engine and say that "the one with the 1100cc engine has significantly more power“
The Genelec will literally not fit Physically to the room space scenarios the Palmer was designed for
I think you chose a very uneven comparison
