The bass unit in Genelec 8030c looks like this picture, from the teardown of one 8030c . The video can be seen on page 52 In this thread. The bass-units namn is P831763 .

Ah, so it’s not the same. Possibly it from the B series then? The P model numbers are alternative numbers for Tympany drivers. Strange enough the one on your pictures doesn’t seem to have the inverted dust cap, but it’s hard to see from that angle. I bet though that price wise, it’s not very different (obviously spare part price will be much higher).

I think those bass units are custom made by Tympany with the chosen parametres by Genelec . In the case of Genelec 8030c, (picture) the number P831763 is not a unit you can buy, but its clearly a HDS alu-frame.
The very low distortion in those monitors suggest that this is not ordinary drivers by Peerless or Tympany.
Genelec make their own drivers in the Genelec-factory for the coaxial designs.

Is the 8040B worth the extra $$$ over 8030C? Because they're specs seem pretty close.

Do you need the extra output? The question is: how much output do you actually get from the 8030C? The single number in the spec sheet is meaningless. From 8050 you can find a proper MaxSPL vs frequency plot. I thought I saw one of the 8040 as well, but can't find it now. Have never seen any for the 8030.

Would be interesting to know if it would be good enough for a 5.x system at 2.5m distance from LRC (and a bit closer to the rears). I've always thought that 8050 would be needed, but since I now use KEF R500's with only 50W amps, and they go plenty loud, I'm not so sure I really need much more.

How does it make sense that the 8040 is only 1 db louder?

8040B is really good compared to most passives and actives, but its an older analog active loudspeaker that sounds slightly worse overall compared to the newer 8030c.

The 8040B goes deeper in bass though. How good is 8040B ? its much better than a LS50 in my opinion.

An even better loudspeaker is 8340 that can play 5 dB louder ( peak) and cleaner than 8040B, if the source is digital and you use the digital input.

For a 5.1 home cinema setup with an AVR and analog pre outs , such as a Denon 3700 , the 8040B seems to be good value:)

As I said, these numbers are mostly meaningless. You'll need MaxSPL vs frequency.

Like here for the 8350:
index.php

Spec is 112 dB.. which it makes for a fraction of its bandwidth, and definitely not where it counts: < 150 Hz.

Did Anyone see a similar spec for the 8030C?

Older generation still using class AB amplifier, I guess. The difference between 8330 and 8340 is 6dB for short term max SPL.
It always bugs me that Genelec updated the whole 8000 series( some models are D version now) except the 8040 and 8050 who are left outdated.

Yes, and remember that difference is for only one loudspeaker playing. With two loudspeakers, the difference is more than 10 dB max SPL. Its like comparing a 20 watt amplifier to a 200 watt.

I would say the updated name is 8340 and 8350. 8040B is probably left to be a cheaper alternative if you dont need GLM and a digital input.

I got a pair of second hand 8350A + GLM for the price of 2 new 8050s. Total no-brainer...

Then why did they update the 8030 to C version despite the fact that the 8330 exists?

More demand for an entry config speaker for what is needed near field with a sub. If you genuinely need more than 8030c you should probably get 8340+. The market for an “8040c” is probably small, and they won’t just make one for completeness. There are more benefits to genelec if you buy an 8340 as well and they get you into the GLM ecosystem.

The only smaller Genelec monitor review I could find in soundandrecording.de was the 8331A.

Or 8330A for the GLM.
