Hi all,
Need some advice.
I’m choosing a pair of active monitors for a small room, mainly desktop / close nearfield use. I can either get the new Kali LP-UNF for €350, or buy a used/new Genelec 8030B for €650. I want neutral, honest monitors for mixing — I’m not a fan of overly bright HF (Yamaha HS5 felt too forward for me).

I want neutral, honest monitors for mixing — I’m not a fan of overly bright HF (Yamaha HS5 felt too forward for me).
Quick context:
- Small treated bedroom/studio, mostly desk/listening at ~0.6–1 m.
- Goal: clear, reliable reference for mixing and checking mixes at nearfield levels.
- Budget: €350 is comfortable; €650 is a stretch but possible if it’s worth it.
- Which would you pick for a small desktop nearfield and why — Genelec 8030B or Kali LPUNF?
- Is the Genelec worth the extra money for accuracy and room behaviour in a small setup, or does the Kali offer the better value?
- Any specific placement tips for either on a desk (stands vs isolated pads, toe-in, distance from wall)?
- How do each behave in the low end in small/untreated rooms — do they get muddy or are they controllable?
- If you’ve compared them head-to-head, what differences should I listen for in critical tests (vocals, acoustic guitar, kick/snare, stereo imaging)?
