I don't see many posts on the 8020Ds that's why I'm making this so anyone who has a smallish room (mine is 3x3x3m) can feel confident to safely put the 8020Ds at or near the top of their shortlist.
It's been quite a journey since I restarted my interest in hifi 2 years ago. At one point I had 8 set-ups (3 at home and 5 in the office). But never quite satisfied with any of them.
I started out listening to CheapAudioMan (Aiyima T9!) and many others with similar review styles and but ended up with ASR and Erin as my primary sources of info and education. I still like istening to CAM and the rest for the more entertaining style of content and general update about new products but I rely on ASR and Erin when I'm serious about buying something.
Now I have 2 set-ups at home and 1 in the office. Picture shown is latest my office set-up. Simple, relatively budget friendly and what a treat to my ears! Gives me another reason to love coming into the office and work longer hours haha. Full set-up details: Wiim Ultra + Wiim Mini (For Airplay) into Genelec 8020Ds (bought used USD550 for the pair) backed up with a REL TZeroIII sub. It did take me a while to finally appreciate the look of Genelecs and boy am I glad I get the Genelec design language now.
I think this is the highest SQ set-up so far for me. Credit to ASR for helping me make much better hifi purchase choices and I'm sure also saving quite a bit of money and frustration on this journey. I believe vast majority of people into hifi are tech idiots like me, fumbling our way in the wilderness of subjectivity and snake oil. I've bought my fair share of "audiophile" cables, power conditioners, LPSs and have since sold all of them.
My knowledge of hifi is still a long way off from what I think is sufficient. I still have stupid questions like if 2 speakers are similarly neutral in FR and set-up (eg both are 2-way design and about the same size) and in the same room and other equipment, can they sound very different? If so, what affects that? What is the meaning of tonality and how do we know what kind of tonality we like or we should like?
