Just day dreaming and looking through some super-speaker specs. These seem to have pretty tightly controlled dispersion down below 100hz. I assume these are installed into the studio walls, is the CD simply a by-product of that? Has anyone here experienced these in person?

I wonder how many of these are around? I think a pair is about $60000….
Maybe somebody got to visit/worked at a large studio?

It's probably a by-product of the use of massive 18" woofers in a ridiculously wide baffle. I doubt Genelec is publishing directivity measured in soffit configurations.

Nowhere near that expensive. A single 1236A retails for about the price of a pair of 8351A's here in Australia.

That seems unlikely. I can't actually find a source for price on these, they seem to be special order everywhere, but given the 1238A is $8K/ea these must be way more than that. If that open box price on Reverb is realistic then $30K/ea new is probably right.

Have a scroll through the prices here - https://www.soundseasy.com.au/pages/search-results?q=genelec&page_num=4

I see a pair of 8351As at $12999, and a single 1236A listed at $12800.

Prices are in Australian Dollars.

I don't know what the 1238a sells for here, but the 1237a is listed at under $8000AUD. The S360 is under $7000AUD.

I feel like that's probably a messed up listing, because when you click through the page, there is only "contact us for price/availability". Unlike the other options, which have actual pre-order or add to cart buttons.

I never know what to make of pricing in Australia it always seems completely divorced from any other country or the exchange rate. Maybe there is some crazy regional pricing scheme going on?

Yeah keep dreaming.

Top end recommended prices are about (includes ~24% VAT)

1234A 30000€/pair
1235A 45000€/pair
1236A 80000€/pair

It's somewhat frustrating lineup, having heard the first two. Old style DSP in all with only few filters and only 1236A actually goes down to 20hz, others cut off pretty sharp at 30hz, requiring subs for the most enthusiast. But if I had unlimited cash..

They are just that big ;) The baffle step only starts just below 200 Hz:

Anyone here who has listened to the 1236A ?
Here is a photo of it (which @Pearljam5000 posted in the Genelec S360 review):

Some videos:

David Guetta has the 1234, see here. You easily find videos of other studios using the 1234 as well.

Another model which looks a little bit like the 1236A:

That speaker is not the 1236A (it has two higher frequency elements, while 1236A has three). It seems like that model is called 1818.

There is no such Genelec model as "1818". Monitor in picture is either 1234A, or its analog foredad 1034B

1236A (or its analog foredad 1036A) is best recognized from its dual mid-drivers, 18" bass drivers and generally HUGE proportions:

if high SPLs and low distortion is the goal why not using compression drivers?
those two mids look...

The tweeter is a 2” compression driver…
hi thanks a lot and excuse me i did not know
one day i went to visit a friend who is a collector of vintage drivers and speakers
he connected with just a capacitor in series i don't remember the value a jbl 375 compression driver and played a track with trumpets
i cannot explain the feeling of effortless power that was coming from that horn
like passing from a sport car to a F1
fwiu horn design and build is very critical to get the best from a compression driver
but considering that main monitors are intended to be listened from some distance the compression drivers could be a option not only for the tweeters but also for the midrange
they are also less demanding for the amplification
another solution could be to horn load a very good cone midrange
i understand Avantgarde brand do just that with great results

I have listened to them here multiple times. Truly the greatest sound system I've ever heard and I'm not alone with the opinion.
It is simply the highest quality live performance audio system in the world.

I have never heard such clean sound with concert level SPL. The tonality was what you'd expect from a neutral speaker from Genelec and there was absolutely no hiss or audible distortions which I thought was not even possible playing so loud. The virtual acoustics system also makes the venue disappear, the soundstage is truly sublime. I highly recommend checking the place out if you are ever in Finland, they have gigs there every week and the ticket prices are pretty cheap too. During the worst covid times you could actually rent the whole venue for an hour to play your own music, I think it cost 200 euros and they let up to 10 people in. I wish I had the chance to do that..
