Geekyaudio HD800 | Chinese “Electrostatic” Clone

Google suggested these weird clones with an inconsistent store page touting different driver sizes and that it features the hd800s acoustic radiator and chassis. Supposedly they are electrostatic but they work with your standard amp? https://a.aliexpress.com/_msehKlp

Anyone heard of this company or have an idea what they are on about? Screams scam to me but there seems to be some persons online who’ve gotten other products from this AliExpress storefront.

Electrostatic+ working with a standard amp can be true with an elektret driver where the diaphragm is "permanently" charged so that no bias voltage is required. Quite uncommon today. The only modern-ish headphones I know which use this are/were the Mitchell & Jonhson hybrid driver ones.

It’s just so unlikely that it’s an electret design and if it were, the 300ohms mentioned would be way off given that they work as a capacitive load in the kilo-ohms territory. Not saying it’s impossible but I have my doubts. Either way the states impedance makes little sense so relying on that is probably not the best idea.

Neither seems like a very credible source to me, but maybe I'm overlooking a third option (the company known as Google reached out to you personally to recommend this product?)

I was searching for data on the Sony MDR-SAxxx line and as google does, up at the top, there’s a suggested shopping search. These just happened to catch my eye as a rather peculiar item, no LLM has actively recommended this to me. It did not have a paid promotion tag on it either though I’d imagine AliExpress does pay to promote their shop heavily.

Sure, it’s a paid advertisement. I don’t think that’s terribly relevant to the conversation. It could’ve just as easily suggested B&H, Sweetwater or Headphones.com, how I got there wouldn’t impact the credibility one way or another. The storefront itself does impact the credibility, I’ll give you that.
