Gain Stacking (Turntable>Fosi Audio Box X4 phono preamp>Wiim Pro Plus>Wiim Amp Ultra)

Changed Cartridge from Nagaoka Mp110 to AT VM95ML. Sound output compared to the Nagaoka is so low that i have to crank up my WIIM Amp Ultra to around 90 for a decent sound output (pre-gain is already set at 10 in the Wiim Amp Ultra). Thinking of putting my spare Wiim pro plus between the phono preamp and the Wiim Amp Ultra then again increase the gain. Your thoughts. Thanks.

Gain setting already at max 10. Also full volume for the phono pre amp.

What is your phono preamp?
Sounds like it does not have enough output to feed the line-level input on the Wiim.

Nominal output levels are 5mV for the MP110 and 3.5mV for the VM95ML so it's lower but not by a huge amount (~3dB). If you've had to change gain by more than that then something else is wrong.

2 phono preamps were used, Project Phone Box E and Fosi Box X4. Both have the same lower sound output. Will probably check the cartridge connection

I just grabbed this off the Net. I've used a couple of SUTs with my older Mcintosh C20/ Grado and Sumico MC 2.8-3.3 mV carts. The problem is always noise, though. You definitely have to hold your tongue just right to make everything as quiet as possible in reference to floor noise.

I currently use a Herron V2, and you have to add or subtract the valves to adjust the gain. I also have an MP100 and onboard (s) that work very well on all the low-voltage carts I still use all 3 from time to time with NO SUT, with a C2500 and C53 when I'm tinkering.

You might need to add a loading plug to get everything adjusted correctly. Below 4.0 mV you need to be adding gain

I have a Parks Audio Puffin that is a heck of a piece of tech. The newer Waxxing is all the rage, but the mighty Puffin is an outstanding piece of craftmanship. I had great support from the original owner too.

There is a difference in cost; none of the 3 I mentioned are inexpensive either, but Parks Audio has some outstanding features all built in, and I've seen them as low as 275.00 and up to 450.00.

I don't understand the SUT suggestion - this isn't a moving coil we're talking about, but one of the most common moving magnets currently available. It should be fine with any MM input.

Why is the volume so low? Pretty generic MM pickup used with countless turntables, into lots of basic phono inputs without problems.

Are the phono stage settings correct? Did you try connecting it to the phono in on the Ultra and leave the Fosi out?
