My foster father took those pills (Carter's Little Liver Pills) back in the day. The pills came in a small glass vial, and they were little white hard spheres about 3mm in diameter. They were found to be inert with no medical or other effect whatsoever. In spite of being told this, he believed that they helped him and doggedly took them every day.

My comment:

The product was patented and the active ingredients were discussed in 1942 as shown below. Formulated in the mid 1800s from traditional theories about liver and intestines the ingredients were considered to have liver supporting and laxative effects, although each pills' herbal content must have been slight to avoid over dosing. At the end of the 1950s it's active ingredient formula was changed replacing it's May Apple podophyllum plant extract with the laxative bisacodyl (same as today's popular over-the-counter U.S.A. brand Dulcolax). The product had earlier in the 1950s been forced to drop all usage of the word "liver" as there was (as quoted above) "no medicinal or other effect" on that organ.
