On the Death Star they used a video mixing console to operate its planet-destroying weapon, so I don't see any problem using some DAT machines to talk to aliens.

I only ever saw the beginning of that movie Get him to the Greek, could never finish it but I remember those speakers. Every guy in a show/movie that looks well off has to have a McIntosh Amp.
On the show Mayday - Air Disasters they always have tape machines and what look like prop speakers in the background.
