Fun with vinyl measurements

Does anyone know if the sellers on eBay with VN5XMR SAS/B for around $205 are legit? That's about $75 less than from jico-stylus.com.

I wouldn't know. I have only bought from JICO or from DaCapo.

DaCapo: "Only to Europe".
Yes. When I got a problem with one of their stylii, support from JICO was quite poor. So I turned to a dealer i Europe and my experience with them was much better than with JICO direct.

@Balle Clorin, per a comment on another forum, have you noticed or verified if the Shaknspin combines "yaw" in the measurement? Strikes me as a rather weird thing to do - I missed the part in the standards that W&F should include runout, warps, etc.
"Yaw" do you mean the motion if a poor platter platter swings up /down at the edge? I cannot imagine that Shankspin corrects for that, besides any other motion than pure rotation will be minimal since the sensor is about 1cm from the spindle. Warps do affect W&F values when using test record of course. Ideally S should correct for sensors distance from center-if needed- but nor sure if it does. I do not notice any difference if I place S on an ring centered over spindle vs neighbor to spindle

Correct. I can’t see why they’d measure that as it’s extraneous to W&F, and as you point out, the impact would be negligible in any but pathological cases.

I also don’t see in their data where it’d exist. Everything they show is rotational data, and it’d make even less sense to poison those numbers with “yaw”, or “elevation”, or whatever.

The claim was in the that DD Hoffman thread. Didn’t bother asking there as it was made by someone notorious for misinformation, and was seemingly just a diversionary tactic.

Good that you’ve a good dealer. Maybe I’ll pick one up when I’m in Tokyo next year. Just not very motivated to sink money in to a Vx.

More Azimuth checks usin AnalogMagik software and Merolemez test record made with different Azimuth angles( 40-50 degree modulation)

Azimuth set up with other test records( Gyro OC9 with Toshiba)

ive ordered jico styli from ebay sellers in japan with zero issues.

By coincidence i noticed the arm's foot on my Denon 51F was not completely tight. In fact the whole arm could nudge if i pushed firmly, so tightened it

And voila Suddenly my ugly resonance at 80z was gone!!!
AnalogMagik V2 Pink noise that is the only track that triggered the resonance so obviously, maybe the modulation level matters

I've seen similar things - Q and level of resonance can be changed by tightening screws- at least sometimes.

I wonder why the AnalogMagik pink noise track show arm resonances much more obvious than other PN and sweep tracks?

AMV2 record more gain different cartridge same arm (before improvement with tighter screw)

A sweep only slightly indicate that something was going on at 80 Hz. CA TRS-1007

Ultimate PN show very little of the 80Hz problem

Denon XG-7005 Pink Noise track show no problem in main/Left channel. but crosstalk channel indicate something

Comparing the AanalokMagik V2 PN and Denon XG-7005 the AM is -30.5db and and Denon -27.6db, and Denson still show nothing wrong in the main channel,
Sweeps at just CoolEditPro recording and FFT

With SME V on Gyro SE +ATOC9MLii much less irregularities

Look at the AM at both 33 and 45 - if the artefact moves, it's the record.

In comparing sweeps to pink noise, consider how long a particular fundamental is present with a sweep vs the spectral density of pink noise - these are very different test signals.

You may get more insight from a sweep if you look at a linear waterfall rather than integrating the entire signal.

if you are ready to tighten up your tonearm...the high level sweep/pink comparaison...will certainly be interesting ;-)
