Some speaker designers recommend using 3 full range drivers of different diameter with 3 way filter. Anyone tried this recipe?

I've never heard of that. There's no need for a speaker to extend beyond its crossover range. And it's impossible to make a true-full range driver.

"Full range" just means the driver is intended to be used alone. It's a compromise. (Mostly a cost-compromise.) The highs usually roll-off and the bass is usually limited too.

Sometimes many-many small-identical full-range drivers are used in an array. The small size allows high-frequencies and multiple drivers increase the total cone area which is required for bass.

I would not go that way either but you can search this forum for Bessel Array and Murphy's Corner Line Array. Both of them use multiple full-range drivers without a crossover.
Very heavy DSP is needed of course to correct the frequency response (this is inevitable in case of all one-way systems, regardless of the number and size of the driver(s))
