I was having a discussion with a friend about his next best steps for his hifi setup. Genelec equipment had recently impressed him, and their DSP room treatment software. As usual, the conversation went on, and I reminisced about my late father’s equipment (Sansui AU-717 amp, tape deck, tuner, and Revox A77) and the Acoustic Research 150 500R loudspeakers, which had left a lasting impression on me.
Unfortunately, I had not recovered his equipment, which eventually was lost to time. Soon after the call I found a guy in the Netherlands selling the exact model of those loudspeakers for 250 euros. I couldn’t resist, and just bought them. They look in perfect condition, as if they were preserved in permafrost.
I’m aware that the paper cones/domes might be worn, but I can listen to them before purchase. However, there’s not much information available about these speakers, aside from rare posts on Dutch forums. This could be because they were produced in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, and sold by Tempofoon in Tilburg. They were quite a local product, so the market was quite restricted. This could explain the lack of online information.
I’m hoping someone here owns the same model or has information about it. I’d love to hear about their experiences and how bad the cones/domes can/will be affected over time. I’m considering having them restored by a shop in France. However, I’d prefer to listen to them immediately.
