I would suggest SMSL SU 1 DAC with Topping L30 II ( SE only no Balanced connections ) I`ve actually used other Topping and SMSL Dac Headphone amps like the DX3 Pro & D12, none of the mid range HPA & Pre amp with built in Dac`s I listened to could touch the mentioned combo as far as purity.

The Topping L70 I have not listened to it`s double the price of the L 30 II, but L70 has balanced connections. The L50 as no pre amp mode only a pass through so it only a HPA.

Worth looking over the spec`s of the L30 II and L70 to compare, you just need to also purchase a DAC but no need for volume control. Heads up the SMSL SU1 is no compatible with cellphones it needs more power and USBC Y splitter will not work with 99% of USB-C cables I own it and even reached out to SMSL to ask for firmware upgrade to solve this issue but later realized it`s a USB-C cable issue...

I was able to get it to work using the Fosi Audio DS1 USBC cable with a Y splitter the catch is I was not able to find any other cable that would work other than the Fosi cable I tried a few out of curiosity even made thread on ASR that nobody was able to explain why the Fosi USB-C cable was the only one that works.

Bonus is you can order the Fosi cable separately from the DS1 BUT you need to email Fosi Audio this request as they don`t yet sell them in there selections. I asked them to use Amazon but nothing so far.
If you ordered one you could use the SMSL SU1 with a cellphone using a USB-C y splitter

worth mentioning the other USB-C cables were similar in length to the Fosi DS1 USB-C cable and none worked.

Yes AP mastering did compare the Fosi ZH3 alone side other more expensive units and praised it for it`s value for the money spent.

He didn't have any Topping or SMSL tests only price comparisons. He also said the A70 pro was very expensive compared to the Fosi he had in his hands as is has a built in Dac but didn't mention the less expensive L70 that is in the same high end league as the A70 Pro it appears they are almost twins.

He did not do in-depth comparison's on Digital volume controls vs Analog volume controls in that video.

Some devices with Digital volume raise the bit count on a 16 bit file to 32 bits but this does absolutely nothing to the files information it`s just sales fluff and miss information causing much frustration for millions of people who would have been willing to spend money.

Ap mastering has videos explaining the bit up conversion in depth.

I can`t say for 100% certainty but I seem to remember him stating that when you take the original 16 bit file and raise it to 32 bit then turn down the volume there is still the same loses.

The DX3 pro is very high quality Audio and it appears the Fosi ZH3 is no slouch ether so it boils down to are you satisfied ? I was but my curiosity and high interest in purity pushed me to search that will only have no doubt cost more money so if your happy, be happy :)
A big problem people run into with usb c cables is that a charging cable often doesn't work reliably for data transfer.

Will I'm really pleased with mine, and design wise it's a near perfect match for the Edifier MR3. I still can't believe I picked this up for under £130. Surely the bargain of the year (or decade?) and I already felt certain that award was going to be given the DX5II. Good times!
Mine is driving some pretty hefty speakers, ZH3 feeding: ZA3 amp running Yamaha NS-777 and Aiyima A07 driving Sony SS-DX50... Sound absolutely huge!!!

Did anyone try the ZH3 with some really low impedance IEMS? I got some at 7Ohms and am worried about noise floor. Its currently on sale for really cheap in Europe and im tempted.

While I do not have hard to drive IEM or headphones, I came across this review that might be helpful to you. Good explanation of potential headphone jack noise and how to easily defeat it. The part you are asking about is covered starting at around 6:45.

I would also add that I really enjoy the ZH3 in all of my listening environments/equipment. I love it.

I currently own a Fiio K5 ESS, but since im switching alot between 6.35mm and 4.4mm i was looking for a DAC with Both of those.

Turning off Bypass to get rid of the noise floor is quite easy, yet its sad you have to do this at all. The K5 plays everything I throw at it.

I have to reconsider or just go Topping DX5 ii i guess.

will it break with 12 ohm planars ? Edition XV ?

we shall see - it comes tomorrow

Hello! I appreciate any feedback of those who have the ZH3 and they either do or don't have the problem that I am experiencing or you don't have the said amp but you can help me out either way. So my problem is that the headphone out ports are kind of loose inside the aluminium chassis and if I shake the whole chassis gently I can hear a faint knocking sound when the ports are touching the chassis. Also when I plug my headphones in and I wiggle the cable where it connects, though the cable sits extremely flush, the port itself kind of wiggles/wobbles left-right-up-down. Is this normal or should I be worried and return the unit? I don't know if this is a good explanation, hope it was clear.
Thank you in advance!

No problemo powering 12 ohm planars
I have zero issues powering the headphones/iems I am currently listening to (or any I've had in for a listening demo including the TinHiFi P1):

Hifiman Edition XS (planar), considered moderately hard to drive; 18 ohm impedance, 92 dB sensitivity
Artti T10 (planar); moderately hard to drive; 16.5 ohm, 96 dB
Fosi im4 (dynamic); easy to drive; 21 ohm, 109 dB
Juzear Defiant (dynamic/BA hybrid); 32 ohm, 109 dB

All are comfortable listening level with plenty of headroom. The XS is 50%ish using the 4.4 mm jack for me. Not a hint of noise on any of them.

Objectively, considering only my use cases, and subjectively considering only my listening preferences, ZH3 has been a home run.

Hi
I'm looking for a DAC for my Sennheiser HD 560s headphones. I'm torn between the Topping DX3 Pro+ and this Fosi model. Which one is better?
Thanks

Both are transparent and have enough power for 560s. Choose according to price, which features of one or the other you might have a user for/need today or later, and which one looks best to you.

Does anyone have experience with this and one of the following Topping DX5II, Fiio K13, JDS Element 4? What are your thoughts in comparison?

I had DX5II but sold it due to unreliable dsp. Surprisingly it did not sound as good at full volume high gain driving HE6SE vs the ZH3.

The ZH3 is the only one that has adjustable tone controls on the unit itself, and it’s also the only option that has analog inputs, if either of those matter to you.

If you’re predominantly using a computer or streamer (WIIM) that are DSP capable, then the extra EQ features on those other units don’t really justify spending ~2-3x the price of the ZH3 (w/ discounts).

I have replaced factory power supply with this: SilentPower by iFi Audio iPower X (12V)
My god its good now

Apart from obvious problems like ground loops or insufficient power to run the device, switching DC PSUs does not affect the sound in any way. Also, this DAC measured transparent with the original PSU, so if there were any audible difference, it could only be worse.

It's helpful to know about the problems of sighted testing, human bias and how small level differences affect the sound impression you get from a device. You should look into those topics.

Did the 12v plug from the power supply fit into the DAC, or did you have to use an adapter that came with it?

I have two iFi Power Elite power supplies, and neither plug fit into the DAC; I had to use one of the adapters that came with the power supplies.
