Fosi ZD3 -Balanced DAC (ESS 9039Q2M) - First Look!

I‘m also cery interested in this unit, if you can use the XLR and RCA at the same time, could I use XLR to go to an Amp (V3 mono) and the RCA to a subwoofer (with its own filter) ? Or would there be a better way to connect a sub? (Sub in question is SVS SB-12NSD). I do have now a ZA3 with sub out, but if I switch to V3 monos I will loose my sub-out.

Nothing wrong in connecting RCA out to subwoofer if longer RCA doesn’t cause any issues (like interference or something if running near power line stuff).
If your subwoofer has all the filtering you need then you’ll be good to go.

I would use the same RCA cable as now, 2,5 m if I recall correctly.

I am doing the exact same setup except with a SVS PB-1000. I'm going with dual outputs on the RCA cables to the subwoofer. Going with Dirac Live for room correction. Probably the best bang for your buck setup right now on the market using the ZD3 + V3 mono amp.

Well, I just ordered it yesterday from the Fosi website, $144 seems like a pretty nice price for a DAC with HDMI, volume control and a remote. Now to wait patiently for it to arrive.
I guess I lucked out by being one of the first 300 buyers. Supposedly, I will be getting the 'goodies bag' with my purchase, that [I think] includes FOSI's new volume puck.
I purchased the ZD3 only because it was cheap enough to justify its aesthetic value, as I plan to pair it with a ZA3.

Few days ago, I was told that October 12th is when shipping "starts".
I got sarcastic and asked "When does shipping end?"
FOSI peeps seem to have a good staff that actually answer online questions.
I was assured that mine will be shipping on that date.

I had suggested to considering adding a visible marker to the volume knob dimple:
Hello ,
Thank you for reaching out to us, I hope you are doing well.
We'll work on adding a contrasting color dot to clearly indicate the volume levels.
We welcome any suggestions or ideas you have for optimizing our product.
I am so grateful for your support.
;)

Hahaha Welcome !

I have to say that, with my Za3 as amp and on my two pairs of speakers (Focal JmLab Profil77 and Opium 703) the sound with original opamps is the same than with my Topping E30 pro II, really good but same mood, a lot of clinical trebble, precision and details.

With the other opamp provided by Fosi as a gift, this is another color : the trebble is softer, the medium is forwarded with more warm, the bass is in perfect place.
This is less tiring for long hours listening.

The change is a real thing, not a psychoacustic perception.

How do you know the change is not expectation bias? What controls did you use?

I was not expecting anything because it was free.
I have sensitive and sometimes tiring titanium and kevlar tweeters.
On the same track/volume, the second op-amps are softer. I can't say more honestly.

It sounds not beter, but different and more coherent with MY speakers.

The one thing that put me off - op-amp rolling!!!

FFS, isn't the audiophool scene paranoid enough when a properly made 5532 chip does it all transparently and most of the recordings we play have probably been through hundreds of the effin' things before we get to listen to the final end product? Playing devil's advocate and assuming the 'differences' really can be heard (I've not played the video), wouldn't there be something WRONG with the design if it's so 'sonically sensitive' to these chips?

If it sounds better then good for you Enjoy your gear and the music.

I think I [We? ASR stereotypes?] are a tinkerer-bunch and 'tinkerers-will-tinker'; just like "dogs-will-hunt"?;)
I have a few hardware that have sockets and are 'op-amp roll-able' and I may be 'rewarded" with a set of different op-amps from the fine people who make the ZD3.
But and frankly, I have no aspirations to roll the op-amps (... or a doobie...:p ), but if I run out of things to McGyver and/or 'tinker' with, I may give-into rolling a few op-amps.
Funny, I even have all the ready fixins' to even test the differences, (Umik-1, Cosmos ADCiso, REW, etc., etc.,) but I am not the type to critically judge my music, on the operating table.

You see, @DSJR? We both look like we are in the same camp of 'op-amp rolling' deniers... maybe for different reasons but still...;)
Don't get put off, just roll with the rollers! wink, wink!

I have no interest in rolling opamps. I'd rather leave it in the hands of the company designing these amps. Would be nice to see measurements, to find out if there's actually any change in the amp. I'm pretty sceptical that there is.

However, I did switch out some tubes in my guitar amp, mainly for a bit less gain, since it's a 40 watt amp with a touchy volume knob. (Thanks, Fender.)
