I have a ZH3 as my main desktop headphone amplifier/dac for my squeezebox touch connect to my LMS server and my pc.

My desktop amp is a Marantz MCR 612 and a pair of Yamaha HS3 studio monitors.

HS3 are level matched to the Marantz at 20 when using audio from pc and squeeze box touch and when using the internal cd and streaming options of the Marantz MCR 612 using optical cables. This took a while and this level is high enough to power my speakers connect to my Marantz at a comfortable level.

I have the ZH3 connected the HS3 by xlr input and the Marantz by rca so was expecting to have rematch the speakers again but to my surprise no audio came out of the Marantz but clear audio came out of the HS3 at level 10 on the ZH3.

I tried hiring up to level 20 on the ZH3 and there was still no audio from the MCR612 but the HS3 audio was quite loud now.

I was concerned the Marantz was broken and did a lot off trouble shooting steps and nearly destroyed my HS3 when I used LO out on the ZH3. I know it was a mistake I was concerned the Zh3 was broken.

After switching the audio to the HS3 quickly off there was still audio but it was very quiet. I had to increase the Marntz to nearly level 70 to get a good audio level. This was not acceptable as using any of the other inputs for the Marantz would be way to loud.

Turns out the audio from the RCA outputs of the ZH3 is incredibly weak compared to the XLR. This is inverse to what I know and expect from XLR as it usally a quieter output than RCA
To get a useable signal I had to use my Fosi Audio in bypass at +9 dB. Even then the XLR is way to loud when the ZH3 is at 30.

I would like some advice. To get a useable audio signal out, I was thinking of using either a phono stage like a fosi audio X5 or a another preamplifier like a p4 or a zp3?

Is this even normal for the ZH3? I would generally expect 6 dB less on the RCA out but not a night and day difference. Unfortunately it is missing on the block diagram so I can't tell you what performance should be like normally. This is one for Fosi support I should think.

If you're unlucky, the RCA out may be a mere passthrough from RCA in or something, or perhaps you need to change some setting. If push comes to shove, an assortment of splitters and adapters should get you a second set of outputs from the XLRs. (Per channel: First split XLR into two, then adapt XLR to 1/4" TRS, then adapt stereo 1/4" to dual RCA. This will give you the channel twice with opposite phase. Left should be the one you want.)

Are both outputs (XLR and RCA) supposed to work at the same time? Does anything change if you remove XLR (fully unplug the cords from ZH3)? Manual doesn't mention, but it uses "XLR OR RCA". (and I guess you are only using digital inputs in ZH3).

English is not my main language, so maybe I don't understand something. You have this connection:
LMS server/pc --> Fosi ZH3 (amp/dac) --> (XLR) Yamaha HS3 studio monitors
And you are expecting the sound to come from the Marantz MCR 612?

I have both. The zh3 outputs xlr and rca at the sametime
