This unit has had an intermittent audio "Echo". The latest 1.06 firmware fixes this. If you got your unit before December first I'd upgrade.

@Fosi Audio can you confirm that this firmware update is legitimate?

The firmware update (from v1.04 to v1.06) did not get rid of this sonic issue for me. Day two of listening to/using it after the firmware update and I heard that glitch/echo on both days (once in about 2 hours of listening).

HDMI-CEC issues still persist too.

I have a Fosi p1 feeding a pair of V3 monos. Totally happy with that set up (except for lack of remote), which was fed various inputs (CD, TT, Wiim) through an inexpensive box with 4 buttons. Then by purest luck Fosi's website promotion gifted me with a ZD3, which I just installed today, replacing the P1. I expect to be happy with it as well, except that while the addition of a remote is a plus, the lack of non-digital input means that I need to figure out what to do for turntable input.

I do have the hockey puck Wiim mini, and it occurs to me that it has a analog input and a optical output. Is it feasible to connect the output of my phono preamp to the analog input and output the signal via the optical output to the ZD3, where "feasible" here means it will actually work and not cause me any kind of electrical grief. If this scheme doesn't pan out any suggestions as to how I would introduce turntable input into the (very short) chain ZD3-> V3 Monos -> speakers? Thanks in advance.

One way or another you need analog to digital conversion as the ZD3 only takes digital inputs. The mini can do that through the aux in. The converter is not great, but does it matter for a normal turntable? Unlikely, I’d try it you might be fine.
Depends on what your playing too, a 50 year old used copy of Flat as a Pancake from Head East? Well that converter is isnt the limiting factor lol…

Normal turntable? I'll have you know it's a U-Turn original in Kickstarter green, with the acrylic platter and whatever cartridge was on it when I bought it from someone who was moving out of the apartment building I was living in. And I have a Bugle 2 preamp which a) Amir doesn't recommend, b) was awarded the quizzical postman panther, _and_ c) I built myself from the kit, which I believe is the full three strikes here on ASR.
So if I understand correctly: pretty much the ideal set up for the use-case.
Thanks for the info.

I've tried searching the thread, but haven't found the answer. Does the volume control attenuate the analog output to either XLR or RCA, or does it control the volume in the digital realm by dropping bits?

Hello there, the volume control attenuates the analog output. :)

well ... i liked the ZD3 i got last week so much i ordered the matching fosi ZA3 amp today with the 48 volt PS for $120 delivered using their %20 off coupon . FSMC20

i hope they have a matching "ZP3" preamp in the works with a decent HP out put and balanced in/out .

Trying out a Fosi ZD3 on my Sony A9G, it seems like HDMI ARC/CEC is working fine with nice power on/off control along with remote control volume.

I will spend some more time with it to see if I run into random glitches. If not, I will run some measurements with different op-amps to see what I can find.

Noise is the biggest opportunity for op amp rolling, with the MUSES01/MUSES02 performing spectacularly here

Even though the “advertised” noise performance of the MUSES02 was pretty mediocre.

@Fosi Audio can I use a MUSES01 as well? Or just the MUSES02?

You could use the two inputs of the V3M.

Mine has been perfect. It hasn't happened in weeks. I'd try doing the firmware update again.
I updated the device again, this time using the link you shared here, instead of the one I got from the Fosi Audio support team.

I haven't spent much time to accurately access whether the echo/sonic glitch is gone, but I have a new issue. I faced this issue BEFORE I updated the firmware again - it's what prompted me to do it again actually.

NEW BUG REPORT:

Interestingly, actually more frustratingly, I unfortunately found the device giving me a NEW PROBLEM.

Here's a demonstration of it.

I'd describe what I am hearing as such - no sign or sound of what's normally supposed to be playing for a given clip/film/episode; what I hear instead is a rapidly intermittent loud static noise.

Currently, I've only faced this issue on Netflix, when the audio output on the playing media is 5.1 or Dolby Atmos or any such surround mode. If I switch the audio mode in Netflix to stereo, the problem goes away and the device works/outputs the sound normally.

Has anyone else faced this issue?

anyone have an opinion on these XLR cables?
"Short XLR Cables 1.5ft 2 Pack, Gold-Plated Rean Connectors from Neutrik, Kevlar-Reinforced Nylon Braided XLR Microphone Cable, Mic Cable, Durable Shielded and Balanced XLR Male to Female Cord"

they'll be going between a fosi ZD3 dac and a fosiZA3 amp with the 48v PS .
i don't have golden ears or a thick wallet , but i want quality and durability for my $ .
$17 for a pair of 18 inchers is comfy for my budget . but if their crap cables they're no deal at all !
anyone have an opinion on these or something better for 25 to 30 bucks max for a pair of short ones ?
thanks , Jeff

I've been using Audioblast HQ-4 star quad cables for years without issue- if anything they have consistently gone above and beyond my expectations for ease of use, reliability, durability and noise negating performance. They do fit the budget you described, but if you can't find them shipping to your location, try similar (albeit slightly pricier) alternatives from World's Best Cables. From what I know the two are related and the cables are manufactured using similar processes and are nigh similar in quality so you shouldn't be able to find any fault with them *(for many years at least which makes them a worthy investment imo)

It is not a bug. You are sending 5.1 encoded sound (Dolby Digital/Armos or DTS) to a 2 channel DAC. Set your source or TV to output PCM Stereo.

Two weeks now with this great little box. One thing i keep wishing for improvement:
When selecting screen off, screen should favorably be back to off 2 seconds after a volume change.

Not sur of the firmware, i do not have a windows os computer.

I have audio dropouts where listening when connected to a TCL TV with an Apple TV. No audio dropouts when using a Marantz NR1200 instead of the ZD3.
I am in contact with Fosi Audio support to help me. Here is the question I asked them : Is it possible to change the DPLL setting ?

ZD3 and SMSL DL200 have the same DAC chip ESS ES9039Q2M.
You can read from the SMSL manual :
https://www.smsl-audio.com/upload/portal/download/DL200Manual.pdf

DPLL 1~9, the lower the value, the smaller the clock jitter.

This DPLL setting is a unique function of ESS series products. It can adjust the bandwidth
of the DPLL digital phase-locked loop circuit inside the chip, so that the chip can achieve
a balance between anti-clock jitter and input tolerance.
Effect:
- When the clock stability of the input signal is good, this value can be reduced, so
that the clock performance of the system is better;
- When the clock stability of the input signal is not good, the sound may be
interrupted. Increasing this value can avoid the occurrence of audio interruption!
Especially when using TV as the signal source.

just heard about DPLL today... from 12:30
