Hello, I leave you with my impressions of a new gadget that comes in handy for many scenarios.
I currently use DACS and audio interfaces with a “physical” volume control dial, but being able to locate access to volume control anywhere in the house or at work is often priceless.
It is compatible with a multitude of devices and in this case the use of Bluetooth does not affect sound quality.
This is an advanced test unit and is of course a free opinion and without any commercial ties to the brand.

The philosophy that you are free to express your impressions about our product is something to be thankful for in these current times full of interest.

I received a sample of the new FOSI AUDIO VOL 20, in testing phase for an independent evaluation, a new gadget for the control of our system.

After opening the package a pleasant surprise, a very elegant packaging, well adjusted and with a new combination of modern and stylish colors.

The “Apple feeling” when opening the package anticipates that this is a good product.

What is the VOL 20?

A Bluetooh volume controller.

Okay, but if what I can do with the VOL 20 I can do in other ways, why do I need it?

That's what you might think at first, that the functions that the VOl20 doesn't offer we can get, using the keyboard, going into the Windows menu, using the mouse or talking to SIRI or Alexa.

That would be the long way XD, the advantage of the VOL20 is that it is a physical unit that you can position wherever you want and associate it to a multitude of IOS, Android, Windows, Alexa or Google devices.

This allows you to control the volume independently of the device, pause the song and skip/go back to the next song or video, something you do intuitively, using one of the control buttons.

The VOL 20 has a metal body (Zinc injected) and a central part where the control electronics and LED lighting are housed, protected by a plastic cover.

It includes an internal 750mAh battery and BT 4.2 for wireless operation.

It has a fair weight neither too much nor too little, it allows you to place it without fear of it moving because it is very light and it is not heavy to carry it from one place to another.

On the top of the VOL 20, we find an infinite encoder to regulate the volume.

With the turn of the dial you can feel the increase/decrease of volume you make, very similar to the turn of the wheel of a mouse, knowing how much level you are going to increase.

Depending on the way you operate the device you may notice an oscillation in the turn, in some cases it can be considered to have extra functions but the upper part only allows the volume regulation.

In Windows the jumps are in +/- 2 volume units, in other devices like an Ipad or mobile you will see on screen the volume level.

At the bottom of the VOL 20 you will find 2 buttons and a C-type charging port.

The left button allows you to activate, play/pause, skip/rewind the song and mute.

All this with one, two, three presses or continuous press.

On the right side we have a button for lighting and bluetooth control, which allows us to switch the RGB mode, between the different lighting options available or disable the lighting and disconnect the bluetooth device.

The charging port type C is located between both action buttons, allows both charge the device and control it through the VOL 20 cable, in turn shows the charge level on the screen this level is also indicated by the LEDs of the device.

The ease of configuration and device switching allows you to combine its use with several different devices and for example allows you to use it daily in the work area and comfortably move it to the TV or lounge area by connecting to the devices in the area.

Do I recommend the VOL 20?

YES, this time we are not talking about audio quality but functionality and ergonomics, it allows you to control the volume of your installation and jump between songs or videos with total comfort with a couple of gestures.

With audio interfaces you need a physical connection to control the device and that means having to live with our “beloved cables”.

VOL 20 vs. cables

The Bluetooth connection allows us that independence in the installation and being a level regulation will not affect the sound quality, you can have all your artillery hidden and shoot it with the VOL 20.

ADVANTAGES:

Quality of construction

Intuitive operation

Compatibility with IOS, Android, Alexa, PC devices.

CONS:

No auto power off, has on/off switch.

I hope it's under the $50 range, there are no converters here and Siri or Alexa are not going to make mistakes XD

Looks classy... it's a sheer luxury / convenience item, but honestly that describes a lot of things we consider essential. If it works well and reliably, as long as it is not too expensive, I would consider it.

I don't want to name a price I want, because I am sure Fosi is watching this thread, and they say never to say a number first in a negotiation... :)

I am sure it can't be less than $30 with the metal build and nice packaging... but I happen to know BT 4.2 modules are practically free, and LED modules like this are not necessarily as much as you'd think... so we'll see... :)

I'd be interested in this if it could be hooked up to Home Assistant in some way and used to control arbitrary stuff.

Good point, they would expand their market a bit if it could be used with HA (or other control schemes)- but does HA actually take bluetooth inputs usually?

its kickstarter b/s

didnt you guys want a BT Master vol. controller?

this is i guess???

i'm guessing.... $59???

i dont think its easy to ask more and Fosi is 'value' company - also fosi sell a full TPA3255 amp for like $100 right?
I know people like to hate on launching products via Kickstarter, but let me tell you... it REALLY helps to launch a product this way.

Speaking from experience: Small companies that sell physical products are often struggling to put together enough cashflow to pay for tooling and inventory, especially for a new product. Worst case scenario you pay for everything up front 60 days before it ships to you... and sell it to a distributor or retailer who doesn't pay YOU for the inventory until 90 days after you sell it. So you've got 150 days with no cash coming in, all the cash went out, and you still have to pay rent / salaries etc. somehow. With what cash?

A Kickstarter like this can sometimes enable you to effectively sell the inventory while the factory is making it, or even before. If you time things right you can actually have the cash on hand to pay the factory... on time. And not have to go into debt or otherwise struggle to pay. If you are lucky you even have enough left over for rent and payroll.

Big firms have the credit facilities and ongoing sales where this isn't a big issue... but small ones with only a few products don't. And so Kickstarter "BS" is extremely helpful compared to how it used to be. So if you ask me, god bless Kickstarter for getting people used to paying 30+ days in advance for gadgets. :D

Thanks for sharing. I wish them a lot of success.
Led off option is great news.
+1 for home assistant/ZigBee protocol, maybe next time.

Ps: how can they say "inspired by apple's clean aesthetic" if it is a twin of Microsoft surface dial??

It's about what I was expecting, but short of what I was hoping for. I suggested making it configurable, somewhat like QMK does for keyboards, with switchable modes indicated by the LED ring.

It's really cool but can I use it with my home audio ? It would be great to have that to steer amp ( rotate for volume, click for source change, hold to turn on/off ) it would be fantastic if we could use that in many devices but for now it's a knob for PC. In my case (even if it's cool) it's not very useful.

Can you make a streamer gadget like the Chromecast Audio, please??

Compatible with Harmony as well, this looks brilliant.
EDIT: Thought it meant Logitech Harmony
