Fosi Audio S3….serious streamer?

I feel like Fosi tried a little too hard to be everything to everyone with the S3, and seem to have ended up with a product that doesn't really have a USP. If someone wants an all-in-one streamer at this price point, then surely they're going to buy the WiiM Pro? Similarly, someone can get a Fosi ZD3 and a WiiM mini at the same price point, which gives a great DAC (with USB input) and all the benefits of WiiM streaming. For even less, someone can get the ZH3 and a WiiM mini and have a great little headphone amp as well.

In typical Fosi style they have made the S3 in a different shape, different colour and different set of dimensions to everything else they offer, so even "I'll buy it to match my other Fosi gear" is out of the window as a reason to buy. Still, can't fault Fosi for trying, I have a lot of their stuff and most of it is very good, and it makes other manufactures have to compete on the quality and pricing front.

For anyone interested, here are some of Fosi's popular and recent products, using their distinctive "Tetris Design Language":

Is that really a streamer or a preamp with streaming capabilities?
I’d like to share a few thoughts on Fosi Audio S3 Streamer

The Fosi Audio S3 is an ambitious all-in-one streaming component that combines a network streamer, DAC, and preamplifier in a compact chassis. Designed to serve as the digital heart of a modern Hi-Fi system, the S3 focuses on flexibility, balanced audio performance, and seamless wireless streaming.

One of the most appealing aspects of the S3 is its connectivity and streaming capability. With dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, the unit provides stable and fast wireless audio transmission. It supports popular streaming protocols such as Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, AirPlay 2, and Google Cast, allowing users to stream music directly from their favorite apps. The device also supports playback from local network storage (NAS), making it suitable for listeners who maintain their own digital music libraries.

At the heart of the S3 is the AKM AK4493SEQ DAC, paired with OPA1612 op-amps in a balanced circuit design. This combination is known for delivering a clean, detailed sound signature. The specifications are impressive for the price category, with THD+N as low as 0.00018% and signal-to-noise ratio up to 120 dB, suggesting a very quiet background and accurate signal reproduction. The balanced XLR outputs further enhance performance when connected to balanced amplifiers, potentially offering better channel separation and improved noise rejection.

The S3 also functions as a digital preamp, allowing it to directly control power amplifiers or active speakers. This flexibility simplifies system design, especially for minimalist setups. In addition to analog outputs, the device provides multiple digital connections and features HDMI eARC, which makes it easy to integrate with a television for a simple 2.1 home theater system when paired with a subwoofer.

Ease of use is another strong point. The Fosi Audio mobile app provides straightforward control over playback and system settings. A built-in 5-band equalizer allows users to fine-tune the sound to their taste. Multi-room playback via AirPlay 2 or Google Cast also enables synchronized music throughout the house if multiple S3 units are used.

From a design perspective, the S3 follows Fosi’s typical approach: compact, clean, and practical. Thermal management, trigger control for system power synchronization, and built-in protection circuits all contribute to reliable operation in everyday use.

Overall, the Fosi Audio S3 stands out as a versatile and well-equipped streamer for modern audio systems. By combining streaming, DAC, and preamp functionality in one unit—and including balanced outputs and high-quality DAC architecture—it aims to deliver serious Hi-Fi performance at a relatively accessible price point. For listeners looking to build a streamlined digital front end without sacrificing sound quality, the S3 appears to be a compelling option.

In my system, I connect WiiM Ultra as transport with Optical output to Fosi S3. CD player connects to S3 with RCA, and from the S3 to my amplifier. This setup allows me to experience three different DAC configurations. Each configuration produces noticeably different sonic characteristics.

Using the WiiM Ultra alone connected directly to my preamplifier, the sound is very clear, clean, and transparent, with excellent detail retrieval. The soundstage is precise and well focused, but the overall presentation can feel slightly thin, with lighter bass weight and a somewhat lean tonal balance.

When I connect the WiiM Ultra to the Fosi Audio S3 and use the S3’s AKM DAC, the sound are still clear and clean but also more natural and balanced. The midrange gains a little more body, and instruments such as piano and vocals sound more lifelike. The soundstage also feels slightly wider and more relaxed, while bass notes have better weight and smoothness. I personally love this configuration the most.

Using the Fosi Audio S3 by itself as the streamer and DAC produces a very natural and musical presentation. The tonal balance is slightly warmer and smoother, with a pleasing midrange that works especially well for vocals and acoustic instruments. While the ultimate level of transparency may be slightly lower than the WiiM Ultra alone, the S3 delivers a more organic and comfortable listening experience, making long listening sessions very enjoyable.

Overall, each configuration offers its own strengths, and the ability to experiment with different signal paths makes the system both flexible and engaging.

Overall, the Fosi Audio S3 proves to be a surprisingly capable and flexible digital front end. Its ability to handle multiple input sources and streaming services including Apple AirPlay 2, while offering a smooth, natural sonic character makes it a very enjoyable component in a modern audio system. In comparison, the WiiM Ultra excels in clarity and transparency, but pairing it with the S3’s AKM DAC introduces a fuller and more organic presentation that many listeners may prefer for long listening sessions. The S3 may not chase extreme analytical detail, but it delivers a balanced, musical sound that works well across many genres. For listeners who value versatility, ease of use, and a natural tonal balance, the Fosi S3 is a compelling addition to a streaming-based Hi-Fi system.

….well it looks like it’s got the bells and whistles with an ongoing polish, a very strong contender in the streaming market and certainly one I am considering.

It’s a cut above the Wiim Mini and Fiio SR11.
It caters primarily for iOS and Apple users with Airplay 1 and 2 support, yep 1 and 2!

Android is not an after thought either with Chromecast, Spotify Connect etc and neither is the NAS feature.
Balanced output is excellent as is the pre amp feature.

Early reports like the one above are that it sounds very clean and neutral and release price is reasonable in the UK at £239.

Could upstage most comp up to 350 imo.

P.S. I still prefer the opa828 over the opa1612. Opa828 has better control bass, better separation, faster transient response, better dynamics and is more neutral which in turn may even be a better choice for AKM chips….maybe.

I agree with the SR11 (I owned it and didn't think much of it) but with a price point of £239 the S3's direct competition will the WiiM Pro Plus (not the mini). The Pro Plus is cheaper (at £219) and functionally superior in almost every way (although I'm not an Apple user so can't comment on WiiM + Apple, although the Pro Plus does do Airplay). Either way it's nice to have more quality options at low price points.

The WiiM Pro and Pro Plus lack ARC input, which is pretty important for a lot of people. It takes an upgrade to WiiM Ultra to get ARC, which costs more than S3.

I want a Pro Plus + HDMI + XLR, or an Ultra + AirPlay + XLR - touch screen. It looks like s3 meets my needs.

Most mono or dual TPA3255 PBTL with PFFB amplifiers come with XLR, and some Purifi/Hypex amplifiers come with XLR only.

I was sent an S3 streamer by Fosi a few months ago for assessment under their product testing program.

My main methods of streaming are usually two Wiim minis or Roon over airplay to some Denon receivers.

I tested the S3 at my desk in place of my usual SMSL RAW MDA1 DAC feeding a Schiit Jotunheim 2 acting as preamp into a Fosi ZA3 powering Ascend Sierra 1 v2s. All XLR connections.

The streamer includes volume control over the knob in front, bluetooth remote, or apps. But there is no feedback on the front of the device to dictate the volume. It is not clear if this volume control is digital so I felt more comfortable feeding this into a preamp and leaving the streamer at full volume.

I have no measurement equipment except my ears but the sound from the S3 sounded just as good as my SMSL DAC to me.

The Fosi app is currently pretty no-frills but it did everything I needed and I had no technical issues while using it. The EQ feature is limited and I am not sure if there will be any improvements there. I usually use either no EQ or room correction built into my receivers.

I tested bluetooth, chromecast (plexamp on my s23 ultra), Tidal Connect, UPNP (plex server). Unfortunately the S3 showed up as a Roon Ready but when trying to enable it, it claims it is uncertified and I had to use Chromecast or Airplay. All of these worked as they should. I wish that the Fosi app showed what sample and bitrate was playing through all of these services.

In addition to these streaming inputs, there are also Optical, HDMI eARC, and RCA inputs but I did not test any of these yet. The most notable one that sets the S3 apart is the HDMI input, allowing you to use this as a DAC/preamp with a television as the input.

The S3 has a subwoofer output but it is unclear what sort of crossover is going on there. I checked the app and I do not see any crossover settings so I am making the assumption it is a set crossover frequency and the main outputs may always run full range.

I think that the S3 does have some nice hardware features that sets it apart from the Wiim Pro Plus to justify its price (such as eARC, XLR out, and subwoofer out). But Fosi still needs to do some work to compete with their smartphone app and I don’t know if there is going to be a software update for any EQ improvements or if Roon certification is going to be completed any time soon.

Okay, so here's how it goes with the S3...

When left in HDMI input, the S3 will turn on and turn off on its own based on signals from ARC/CEC. This is fantastic, and already beats Eversolo completely. Volume control via CEC also works fine.

When left in a different input, such as AirPlay, the S3 ignores all signals from ARC/CEC. This is a satisfactory arrangement. For many people, the ARC functionality is something they only want to use occasionally, and this prevents ARC signals from being overly possessive of the S3 (some WiiM Ultra owners complain about this, although there is a switch to disable CEC takeover when other inputs are selected).

If the TV is being watched but another input is in use (such as AirPlay) and the S3 is switched back to HDMI input, it will pick back up on the ARC audio and function fine including volume control and power control.

I also tested automatic power-on with AirPlay. So if S3 is turned off, when I look in output device list in Apple Music on my iPhone, S3 is there. Tapping on it wakes the S3 and any devices attached via 12V trigger. Please note I tested S3 using Ethernet connection--I am not sure if this works over Wi-Fi, I don't feel like programming my Wi-Fi information into the S3 yet.

Initial setup is extremely quick and basic. It comes with a remote, but I don't personally see much use for the remote for my own purposes of this thing since all I want is basically an ARC processing device.

As per @joeyapples post, Roon Ready is...not yet Ready. It is currently still Roon Unready.

Anything else people want me to test or try while I have it? I am not yet sure I will keep it--I might just keep the ZD3 instead which I am about to test.

How does the Airplay 1 or 2 feature work? Do both options appear in the airplay menu?

I only saw AirPlay 2 as an option in Apple Music

In Roon I only see Airplay 2 or Chromecast as options. I just tried my wife's M2 Ipad Air and this is what appears in the Fosi App when I Airplay from it.
I wish that the app said what sample rate and bit depth it was receiving.

It’s seems there is no RCA pass through, looking at Rick Ruiz’s video, RCA in is passed to amlogic chip then to akm dac.

It's a shame it uses XLR connectors... 6.5mm balanced jacks... space could have been saved (see the removal of the input line) with a coaxial SPDIF input, or even stereo subwoofer outputs...
Hopefully this will inspire a future Wiim Pro with more "mk2" quality in terms of audio hardware...

It looks like it is out now, can anyone confirm if it has high and/or low pass filters filters for sub integration?

It does not (yet).
