I am not sure who this product is aimed at. For anyone bothering using separate power amplifiers this is probably too simple a unit. The red knobs may appeal to youngsters but they are not going to use separate amplifiers.

Make a unit with higher quality parts, larger and more options as a completely new range with streamer/dac and a stereo or mono power amplifiers to match in the future.

Alternatively Fosi could have a go at an all-in-one aimed at more upmarket sector.
I think at the very least, the P4 adds flexibility for people who have basic, single RCA-input class D amps but who have multiple sources, and want the convenience of a remote. I think there are more people using vinyl, CDs and a streamer and who don't want to change cabling around over and over.

After SO MANY products on the market with small, pretty questionable tube stages, having Fosi release the P4 and Schiit release the Saga 2 preamp within months of each other was a great thing. I wanted someone to also incorporate a phono preamp, or have as an optional card, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Buckeye in the US has been developing an integrated amplifier for a long while, the work slowed by manufacturing issues and the demands of the rest of their product line. I think eventually Fosi and Aiyima may develop larger integrated, solid state amps, but they probably won't sell as many of those as their small and inexpensive devices.

Another plus of a separate preamp is that one can upgrade the amp or amps if power needs increase, e.g., you can use the P4 now with the Fosi V3 or Aiyima A07, and then jump up to a more powerful stereo amp or monoblocks if needed for a speaker upgrade.

My biggest gripe with the Fosi products is the need for their power bricks. While it does add flexibility, I still tend to prefer devices with internal power and just an AC cord. But even the Schiit Saga 2 was redesigned to use a large Wall-Wart.

On the other hand...
One of the first things* to fail in a device with an internal (SMPS) power supply usually is ... the power supply. External = easy to replace.
(*maybe except for volume control potmeters and signal relays)

Most tone controls these days are centered 50hz and 8khz, not 100hz and 4khz….

Weird.

I think this is brilliant for $100............

I'd like to find reviews saying "better than my mcintosh / Audio research / etc preamp".
Or "hooked it up to my $2000 - $5000 bryston (or whatever), blows me away...........................

But those guys have to sell their expensive preamps before saying that !!!! lol.
... and you would believe that? :)

I couldn't see the position of the volume knob from my sitting position, so I took a black sharpie and covered the whole knob with black. Then I took a paper towel with rubbing alcohol and took off the black ink, except for the ink that got stuck in the little indentation. Now it's got a black dot I can see.

the bass/treble controls are useful since my speakers are too close to a wall and I needed to lower the bass.

The remote control doesn't work that well for controlling the volume. It's very sensitive and if you push the button there's a big change. This could be improved.

What frequencies do the tone controls adjust?

I couldn’t find it any where. Sorry if I just missed it.

"Figured I'd add my experience with the P4,as i bought it for tone control, and thats not adressed in the review or the comments. The bass is ok, seems to be a low shelf centered around 100hz and doesnt bloat the critical 100-200 range much. The treble seems to be centered around 4khz, which i find too low. Was hoping to add some air to the 7khz+ range, as my room is totally dead. As I got it for that role, its going back. Good product but not what i need."

Poking around the internet, I can find +/- 12db, that's about it........................

I emailed Fosi the same time I asked about the tone controls here. I got a reply:

“The P4's tone control range is as follows:

  • Treble adjustment range: 1kHz–20kHz (±12dB)
  • Bass adjustment range: 20Hz–500Hz (±12dB)”

It is a standard Baxandall tone control so looks like this but the bass controls, most likely, are shifted an octave to the left.
