This is a review and detailed measurements of the Fosi Audio Box X5 stereo Phono stage. It was sent to me by the company and costs US $109.99.
Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono turntable LP preamplifier stage Moving Magnet stereo Audio Review.jpg

Company manages to bring a touch of class in a category that is universally utilitarian with those rounded corners and orange power button. Flexibility is provided by supporting both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil cartridges with different gain settings:

The gain setting is sandwiched tightly between the input and output RCA jacks. But company has wisely put in a tall knob to allow for relatively easy adjustment.

I forgot to take a picture of the AC transformer that is rated at indicated 16 volts.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Measurements
It was quite a pleasant shock to see complete lack of distortion in our dashboard resulting in superb level of performance:

If the mains noise was not there, it would likely do even better. As is, it essentially ties with the best phono stage tested:

Moving coil at much higher gain naturally has more noise but still respectable:

Also impressive and very important, RIAA equalization is superbly done:

What's more there is good bit of headroom into treble region (my standard is > 100 mv @ 1 kHz):

Measuring distortion alone, we see that it is vanishingly low, at the level of good DACs and much better than many phono stages:

Conclusions
There are a lot of value oriented phono stages. Fosi innovates by bringing best in class performance while packaging the unit in an attractive enclosure while keeping the cost very reasonable. There is nothing more to ask!

I am happy to recommend Fosi Box X5 phono stage.

Very nice. Are there chances to have a look inside?

Amazon Australia please? EDITED Never Mind.

It's there and at an extremely good price. Thanks!

if it can be essentially intended for use on mm cartdrige....it would be good to indicate the input capacitance... ??? ( impedance in mc?)
just there my little regret on a machine of this type and range absence of this adjustment with some capacitance values see a very low one ( , it remains possible to add more...the opposite is not true)
perhaps for the futur x6...
;-)

Considering my turntable has rumble at about -70 this is very nice and even MC is good enough. Looks like a good deal. Any idea about MM input capacitance?
Edit: And for MC it would be nice to have options for 50/100/200/400/1000Ohm range. I'd happily pay double or triple with both adjustments included.

it still happens more in the use mm mc being attached to expensive cartridges etc etc.....so essentially the capacitance is missing for mm... (I imagine a classic 100ohm in mc)

Wow, worst channel at MM is even 1.9 dB better than the record holder in „modern times“ the Cambridge Duo, which has still a bit more headroom (40 mV instead of 32 mV @ 20 kHz) -
and
The Fosi is even 4 dB better (worst channel) @ MC!
Older tests till 2021 or so not direct comparible duo to different test methods.
So, one of the cheapest phono amps ever is the new record holder in transparency.

Gongrats, and thank you for testing!

If it only had MC and MM capacity/loading settings...

Otherwise this looks like a great and muuuch cheaper alternative to Lehmann Audio phono's (Cambridge / NAD I don't mention because that's garbage tier build quality).

Impressive performance! I wonder if it's possible for a user to verify a phono preamp's performance without an APx analyzer?

yes with a very low impedance source and a very attenuated level... the characteristics being quite low... with some efforts can be observed on devices with lower or older characteristics etc..not like with recent Chinese DACs in the race for 1k sinad etc ;-)
