I use the free programme Fakin' the funk, which will give a thumbs up if the file matches the stated bitrate, and a thumbs down if it doesn't match it. It will also show a spectogram if you like. This spectogram shows the upper limits for various mp3 codecs.
It should be noted, however, that in the settings you would have to set it to measure aggressively to distinguish between 256 kbps mp3 and higher, and the programme does have difficulties properly detecting the bitrate of the Fraunhofer mp3 codec (used by Windows Media Player).
Otherwise, I'm very happy with this programme. I had an album as flac and found out that it was only 160 kbps mp3 :-/.

I'm looking for a quick way to check out some FLAC files to see if they are high res, Redbook level, or lower.

Is there any free software that can quickly check this on MacOS?

Thx.
Brew install ffmpeg
amd you get plenty of infos, man ffmpeg.
there is also a ffprobe cli that does it well.

Does anybody know what happened to this track ? It looks like a double mp3 compression first at 10 khz and later at 16 khz . Taken from a cd that is probably a cassette rip, but this still does not explain.

This program is a joke. It says the original file is "upsampled" and 24-bit FLAC files converted from mp3 are "clean".

Also, even my little toy program can detect issues in some MQA files, and this Lossless Audio Checker can't.

ffprobe (part of the ffmpeg suite) would be able to report the stated bit depth and sample rate. It's not going to do in depth checking and analysis though.
I gave up on audio checking tools some time back, only employing mp3val.exe to check mp3files for most errors that'd prevent play.
If I want to check the quality or compare, Ill load the files up into the DAW and use spectral analysis tools there.
