Yes, the downside to shared mode is that some audio file content played through Foobar2000 will be subject to rate conversion if it differs from whatever the Windows audio panel is set to.
In fact, foobar2000 ditched the DirectSound output and switched to WASAPI shared mode since version 1.6 which solved the limiter issue when using the player's built-in volume control and therefore I don't need to use ASIO anymore. Now I only use ASIO in DAWs.

Also, foobar2000 1.6+ allows automatic resampling using dedicated resamplers within the player rather than the one on Windows mixer as well.

So I see (and hear) no point being someone else's beta tester without getting paid.

I am still seeing "Default: Primary Sound Driver" option in my Foobar2000 1.6.4. Isn't it basically the DirectSound option?

Doesn't matter really as I don't use it.

As long as you are using version 1.6 or above, foobar2000 uses WASAPI shared mode out of the box without installing any additional plugin. You can clearly see the "DS" prefix in a video I posted. It is from foobar2000 1.3.17. The "DS" prefix is gone for good since version 1.6.

1.6
  • Changed system requirements: Windows 7 and a processor with SSE2 instruction set. Windows XP is no longer supported.
  • Default output mode is now WASAPI shared.

Foobar2000 Asio2 vs. Asio official component.

I discovered that it is quite easy to make recordings of the output of the Asio plugins with RME Totalmix and RME DIGIcheck, so I made 3 wav samples of the outputs: Asio and Asio2 and an untouched original sample, all around one minute.

The samples is from Soul Love with David Bowie, taken from the Ken Scott Remix of Ziggy Stardust from 2003, which I think is one of the finest remixes/remasters with a very transparent sound.

The recording is done in 24 bit, so I converted the original 16/44.1 to 24/44.1 with dBpoweramp to match the recordings.

The numbering of the samples in the zip file is done in random order by drawing lots.

Listen to the the samples and tell me what you hear.

I have uploaded the samples to Dropbox (33 MB):
