I have the Hifiman Serenade, with the Hymalaya Pro Gold Upgrade (Exclusive to the EU). I only use it as a DAC and PRE-AMP, since I hate headphones.
Anyone thinking modern R2R DACs are bad or unfocused, should try out this device. The DAC is simply superb. Its price is a flat out steal and Hifiman could and should sell it for far more. I would not trade it for a 5000 USD Delta Sigma DAC, if they offered it for free. There is nothing missing, but everything to be gained. Detailed clear sound, without the ear bleeding harshness of an AK4499. Transparent and airy sound, that makes any ESS9039PRO sound like a flat uninvolved borefest.
R2R DACs are the king of music and feelings and thats the hill I will die on.

Thats my opinion and I fully stand behind it. Why are R2R DACs the most sought after? Just a coincidence or simple "marketing shenanigans"?

Why do people pay 5+ times the price for a good R2R DAC, when they can have a flat and "correct" Delta Sigma DAC for around 200 bucks? I guess everyone is just a fool, right?
I swear, people like this dont actually listen to music but look at graphs. Yeah, im sure your Topping DAC has some great and very flat curves on some SINAD graph. It still sounds like its tearing up my eardrums though. Sorry, not sorry.

It's not an "opinion" - AKM DACs having "ear bleeding harshness" is a falsifiable positive claim with heaps of objective evidence against, and zero evidence for. In other words, it's absolute bulls**t. I don't care how or why people spend their money, just take this BS somewhere else.

MY evidence are my own ears. I do not need some fancy graph or scientific measurements. I can hear and feel the harshness and so do many others. Thats why we choose R2R DACs and Tube PRE-AMPs. But I guess you would be totally okay when people hear rip on R2R DACs and Tube AMPs.

May I suggest that you forcibly argue that ALL DS chips sound the same, and that any difference between any 4499EX or such chip (ESS etc) is bias.
And see who disagrees with you.
If a manufacturer has really tried with the outputs, as in the good old fashioned analog outputs - nothing to do with conversion - then that might make a difference ... or maybe use some valves as FiiO have here
