Fan-less silent PC

windows 10 ltsc is ok until end of 2032 lol

if you must use windows i dont know why people are still fussing

i think this was a done deal a long time ago

you either buy one of them small NUC type units from china, eg. gmktec minisforum beelink etc.

eg.

P6 Lite Mini PC AMD Ryzen 5 3500U (Beats 4300U/N150/N95), 8GB DDR4 RAM 256GB M.2 NVME SSD, mini Gaming pc with USB-C, Triple 4k Display Micro PC, Support 2.5''SSD, WIFI5, Home, Business​


or get something like a Lenovo Thinkcenter USFF M720 M900 or whatever you can get off ebay

i got piles of them things left over from whatever places i consulted at

as long as you do not need to install heaps of SSDs or HDDs inside but you can stream off a nas

this is really good news for me, as now is not a great time to update my pc.
looking at getting AC installed in the house. (never thought i would be saying that as i live in UK)

The little 7000BTU portable unit I bought a few weeks ago helped to keep our living room at a more tolerable temperature and humidity last week, but it really struggled when it got very hot outside (36C) and the house itself was radiating heat back into the room. I am considering installing a split unit now.

True, but everything's gone up. It would probably cost me $1500 to build this box that cost me $1000 in 2023.
Unfortunately we mostly don't get to chose when to build, mainly happens when current box craps the bed.
A very close bolt of lightning sent the last build to an early grave. This one, like the last, will probably fill my needs for many years to come..
If you do build (or buy) a near TOTL computer today, even a new Windoz OS won't get bloated enough to require a new build for a decade or more.

Microsoft has officially extended the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 consumers, pushing the final deadline for critical security patches to October 12, 2027.

they are just going to extend this year after year... the cost is that they need you to enrol your email into their program

as for the above RAM GPU NVME apocalypse... I do get that if you are building your own machine then you will feel the full burden of the costs

BUT I found that if you buy a fitted out whitebox even with higher end parts like DDR5 and GPUs then the cost is ok because there's some absorbing costs to get you to spend $2,000 on a high end PC... however if you are willing to go with last gen then I see stuff like $750 usd micro desktops with 14th gen Intel 6 cores 16gb ddr4 1tb ssds and these 2nd tier brands like MSI Asus and they are workable pcs... and really that's what it comes down to...

Buy a desktop OR a china mini pc... since all them source parts from china then there's some insulation from western AI decadence... you have to live with CXMT or Biwin components though... but if its works, it works and who cares if its made in china... it's all made in china at the end of the day.

Yes, I already mentioned this above, but there are other levers to 'encourage' end-users to Windows 11, like removing support for cloud applications on Windows 10...

As a long term market watcher, It is interesting that manufacturers are starting to make DDR4 again, CPU makers have refreshed the previous DDR4 linked generation, and motherboard makers are joining the party as well....

For those of us that never made the move to the DDR5 generation - RAM upgrades may become viable again, along with CPU upgrades....

Also if upgrading motherboard & CPU it may be possible to move to a new generation motherboard while transferring older DDR4 RAM (my DDR4 is high performance RAM, the new production is limited to lower bandwidths/latencies)

So there may be alternatives at more reasonable prices coming out later this year

Also a laptop with PCMCIA? Not much RAM/CPU required

But both ideally able to run either Linux or windoze, prior to Win10 would be OK

I scored a pile of OG RME HDSP interfacii super cheap, apparently NG for RPi

Anybody know if those "not Firewire at the signal protocol layer" host cables are actually standard FW physically? I hooe so, damn hard to find

You can try one of the inexpensive PCI-e - PCI adapters. Typically they are based on bridge chips which are also used on PCI-e reincarnations of originally PCI soundcards (ESI Juli@-> Juli@ eX, Asus ST -> STX, ...). Relevant discussion e.g. https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=41052
 
I have a 144TB 6 fan music server built in an acoustically damped fractal 7 case. You can barely hear it at full tilt free standing . It is in a hushbox that makes it completely silent and acts as a bass trap.
 
Its a hush box made out of 4 inch thick fiber plates in wood frames in the back of the room. Standing 10 feet tall 4 feet wide and deep it houses The projector and other things as well
