Extreme Snake Oil

But you get a $10,000 power cable with the grounding box.
Trust me …

It’s perfect! The only thing I’d change is to use multi-stage quantum entanglement instead of quantum tunneling. That makes the sound much more dynamic, with less delay and no time smearing due to faster than light transmission.

In another recent video on imaging, one of our well known snake oil promoters has decided to incorporate the Shuntaya Harp into his latest speakers. About 75% of his video is about how the cheap crossover components smear imaging. Along the way, he makes comparable claims for tube connectors and room treatment. Most ASR viewers astutely realize that the common element at GR for parts with “next level” performance is that he sells them.

The Shunyata Harp he endorses claims to eliminate current resonances in speaker cables. Not sure if he just plans to utilize these devices or sell them as well, but given the context of the OP here, thought I would share.

Clearly GR is passionate to take snake oil to the next level!

At least he has a Finite Elemente ‚Spider‘ rack. Which is nice

This is a guy in the UK who makes out he is a great Guru. His qualification are. ‘Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) focused in Finance from Cass Business School’
He sells pointlessly expensive amps and DACs for a living. Not sure if he believes the rubbish he's talking but his customers do, so...

I watched the beginning of that a few days ago. He brings that greatest of scientific arguments, that streaming not sounding worse than local files would be "counterintuitive". Can't argue with intuition!

One of the most beautiful racks and my favorite; I even have two of them.

But first of all, the ones in the video are just cheap E&T replicas of the Finite Element Spider Rack, and the boards on the levels show that he doesn't understand it  .

How can you believe something like that when he works with fakes and then ruins them?

If streaming "degrades" the audio quality I would not dismiss it as so... but rather comment on the quality of the stream...
You know... with ffmpeg you can easily re-encode an mp3 to a flac, but...

At least the fake and the real thing will make the exact same amount of difference to sound quality, nothing.

Hi there!

I'm starting a little thread to compile all the stupid things you hear people say related to audio. It could be a seller in an audio shop, or someone you know, or an article on the web, doesn't matter.
Also I don't mean stupid things like "this superior cable will bring better quality" because even though we now it's incorrect, it has at least a scientific ground.

No, I'm talking about things that absolutely don't make any sense in the first place. For instance:

"Different Ethernet cables make a difference in audio quality"

You know, like the famous $1000 "audiophile" cable. This is impossible as audio over network is designed in a bit-perfect way, every single packet will be verified and corrected if required. So this is scientifically 100% impossible. But wait, there's even more stupid! Here is something a seller told me (I swear this is real):

They wanted to sell me a little rigid disc that you place under your amplifier (not inside, under it, so outside the case) to "force all logic gates to open and close at the same time"

Honestly it made me laugh quite a bit. So, what are some truly, truly stupid things you've been told?

There's a snake oil thread with some crazy stuff.

Link to thread?

I was more than a bit surprised at having a salesman at a high end shop tell me "There are only so many ways to put speakers in a box. No matter how you make the oatmeal it usually turns out to be oatmeal." It was odd to take the one component in a system that can affect the sound a lot and downplay it.

Sort of the opposite story, but

I rarely buy anything from a dealer but I did go into one to buy an optical cable. He says to me 'We only sell one brand, it's £10, but there's no point paying more since they all perform the same.' He said it cautiously, presumably expecting an argument. He looked surprised when I didn't dispute with him.

At a show was looking at some streamers, a whole range of five or six from two grand up to ten grand. Salesman was keen. I asked what the difference was between the £2K and the £10K. He says 'The amount of storage goes up as you go up the range.'

Seeing I was nonplussed by that (who pays ten grand for a hard drive?) he quickly added 'Oh and the sound quality gets better too!'

Seems like an opportune, umm, opportunity to observe that some folks do like tripping...
