Extreme Snake Oil

The problem, though: If the whole affair is stacked, one has to use a stepladder to access the CD transport (assuming it is on the top).

EDIT:
PS Grand Complications is such a great name for a "Veblen" product.
Well, one of the complications is it allows you to sneer at less wealthy people’s Veblen goods with impunity.

My favorite Veblen watches are those by Richard Mille. Sure it’s expensive, but it’s also ugly, and it’s really hard to read the time. But at least you know they’re worth it, because they generate enough profit to build sailboats that can’t operate on their own, but are really fast for the one person that pilots them, amongst other racing boats.

I had in my hand a Patek Philippe grande complication. It was in my house. It was in the possession of my father, but belonged to the State of Florida. He arranged for it to be donated to a museum, where it was promptly stolen. That was about 60 years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.

I do not think that price only makes something snake oil. Is it serving its purpose? Does it clear the threshold of inaudible noise/distortion? If yes, then we are in the realm of individual value perception.
I disagree. If it is sold as having superior audio quality to the lesser models costing a mere £250 or £500 or,£1K (0r even£10K) (and they always are), Then they are snake oil, in that they are failing to live up to the promises of the manufacturer.

For me, there is a crucial diference between Patek Philippe and dCS. If You look at the attached add of PP, or their webpage, You will notice that there are no wild claims of performance, or features, that could be said to be without basis. The product is simply described as it is.

Thanks @antcollinet for the reply at that feeble attempt at justifying the price of the $300,000 B.S contraption.

Another fair point..

Peace.

dCS don't really make any far-fetched claims for their equipment. Their trope is overengineering for effect and then declaring "it's all about the music" or some such slogan. The idea is to convince the client that they care more about the music and are delivering equipment that will get the reproduced signal as close as it can be to prefect. Just the same way a Wiim Pro can do....

This is a power board.

The manufacturer is asking US$1290 for it.

However, that's peanuts because ....

"Music via the Eros V2 is more open, detailed, times better and appears to produce a greater dynamic range. There’s more top-end air and spaciousness, the bass is cleaner and has more texture, vocals are more focussed yet natural, and the soundstage returned to dimension similar to those with the Chord loom in the system."

It's so good, the reviewer modified a trope!

"My youngest son has no interest in music or hi-fi and usually leaves the room when the music starts. Today, he was far too interested in picking components for our new PC build to pack up and head for his room, so I thought I would indulge him in some blind listening tests. I was playing the new album from Badbadnotgood, Your Soul and Mine(Qobuz 24/96), I removed the FFT and restarted the track Mid Spiral, then repeated it with the FFT plugged into the wall. Without hesitation he declared the music sounded more detailed and the instruments were easier to follow; maybe there’s hope for the younger generation after all."

”If I pretend to be interested, maybe I’ll get that RTX 4090”. ;)

I'm not sure if it was posted or not.

I bought his very first ( I think) cartridge a modified EMT, it at least worked, kept it for years until an unfortunate incident involving my aunt and a yellow duster.

And I'll say again- vdH also sells quack medicine devices which takes them from dishonest to downright evil. This is a horrible human being.
This ?

This ?

Yes, and he showed some other stuff at an AXPONA that I attended. Ironically, he grabbed an audience member for one of the demos, and it was the guy I came to the show with. He is my internist.

Quack medicine is a whole 'nother level of evil.

Recent case that led to man slaughter charges in the UK shows how badly wrong quack medicine can go ...

A direct connection ? beetwen audio foo and quack ? wow .

I always say to people that think audio foo is harmless that it promotes a way of thinking that's dangerous in other ways , medicine and nutrient scams are the bigger fish here .
Next step is fake cancer treatments ( that's sadly a thing ).

Sorry im still learning the ways of the snake oil marketing of this great hobby so the above product is supposed to perceive your brain in a way that improves audio?

Fascinating does Amirm occasionally review this stuff and find its all placebo?
