Hi everyone,
does anyone know of a device capable of extracting audio from a TV's ARC output and transmitting it via HDMI to an older, non-compatible AV receiver?
I want to help a friend who has an Amazon Music subscription to play Atmos tracks in 7.1 channels from an Amazon Fire Stick.
His TV is compatible with Atmos via Dolby Digital Plus.
I thought it would be simple, but I can't find any device that supports more than 5.1.
Currently, he's using the TV's optical output, so he already has 5.1.

I don't think you can get 7.1 channels on an older hdmi. Even eArc is limited to 5.1.

Look into HDFury products. If it can be done, they will have it.

Could you elaborate more? eARC at least in theory is not limited to 5.1 (but practically we may see limits depending on this and that, but where do you see such).
You are right. Look up vroom by hd fury

You probably can use HDMI audio extractor between Firestick and TV.
Or simply connect Firestick directly to AVR. Even buy a second Firestick for that purpose, if there is a problem with video signal on AVR.

Of course you can, standard ARC is limited to doing Dolby Digital+ aka EAC3 but within that can even do the compressed Atmos version.

The limit is actually the approximately 3Mbit/s provided by ARC, while EAC3 can technically do 6.144Mbit/s almost uses are limited to 3Mbit so they will fit in ARC.

The the reference to a 5.1 limit comes from the Wikipedia HDMI page and is simply wrong. However it’s difficult to correct as the specs are not public so they can’t be cited.

Technically eARC can do 32 channels of PCM depending on how it’s implemented however more normally it would be transmitting TrueHD or MAT2.

In any case whatever your TV can produce HD Fury can copy on to a normal HDMI output to get it in to a non-ARC receiver.

Thanks, if the one requested isn't compatible, we'll take that into account. HD Fury is out of budget.

Are you using it the way I'm going to use it? Does it work correctly?
At first I used it in eARC mode, but now I am using it as a switch. Both work. I cannot remember anymore why I ended up like it is currently. I had some lip sync issues at one point and I also struggled with some CEC (volume/mute and auto start/auto stop, and multichannel pcm and dolby mat crashing the projector). I have set it up as 7.1 (in apple tv i have disabled atmos, so pcm only no mat). I might try otherwise too but current works hood enough. Volume CEC still doesn’t seem to pass from appletv connected to switch, connected to projector connected to minidsp earc. In current setup it works quite well, except CEC to minidsp. I now have configured apple remote to use IR to change volume. The projector remote works fine with volume (CEC) to minidsp. I don’t have any decoders so sources output either stereo pcm/multichannel pcm or analog and i do 7.1 downmixing to 2.0 on minidsp.

I think with Fury you have more options to solve potential issues. Just be aware that it may not be all roses.

One additional thing. My setup is a bit esoteric, so to get this work ergonomically is a bit challenge. E.g. when I want to watch Apple TV I want to all happen from AppleTV remote (no other remote needed), but a lot of things need to happen:
1. projector needs to turn on/off when AppleTV turns on/off and go to right input
2. same with drop down screen (needs to go down and up automatically)
3. the minidsp htx needs to also turn on/off automatically.
4. and finally my active speakers need to turn on/off (fortunately they can do it automatically based on signal or absense of signal)
5. I can control volume and mute from apple tv remote.

Feintech received and is working correctly, extracting Atmos from Amazon and Apple TV.
