External DAC or not?

I currently have this setup: Wiim Mini-SMSL DO100-Hypex Ncore 250. If I replace the Mini with the Ultra, will I still need the SMSL or just use the DAC of the Ultra? Wonder if the Ultra DAC is good enough comparing to the DO100. I also have a SVS SB-1000 Pro which is now connected to the SMSL. In case I keep the DO100, how will I connect the sub? to the Do100 or the Wiim Ultra?

Here's review of the Ultra. There is sub out so you would connect the sub to the Ultra. It also has room correction. You wouldn't need the SMSL so you could use it in a different system or sell it.

The WiiM Ultra is more than good enough.

Ideally, connect both the Sub and your Amp directly to the WiiM, without an external DAC in been.

Thank you. In future can I still add a minidsp, say 2x4 HD, to this setup? Or the Ultra can handle the dsp functionality well?

I have no idea how good WiiM’s room correction is. There is a WiiM forum you could research but here's some basic specs.

EQ

24 preset EQ settings, 10-band Graphics EQ, 10-band parametric EQ

Subwoofer Output

Comprehensive bass management
Adjustable crossover frequency, level, phase, and latency.

You can add it to the setup if you need it, but the DSP on the WiiM is already a good start, I would try it before adding a MiniDSP. If you find you have correctable problems the WiiM is not able to correct the MiniDSP might be a good addition.

I can see only two reasons for adding a 2x4HD to the Ultra:

-the WiiM's Parametric EQ is not good enough for your needs and you want to try Dirac

-you want to use more than one subwoofer and use something like MSO for integration.

Thank you. In that case how do I connect the minidsp 2x4 to the Ultra? Also how I connect the subwoofer(s) to the setup, Ultra or MiniDsp?

Mitasr,

Use a toslink cable to connect the Wiim and the minidsp. The minidsp has 4 channels for output so you will be able to connect both your amp and your sub. Then it is just a quick configuration and you're setup !
