Excellent CD Masters

Well, sort of,.. but not really,..LOL
Without a Limiter, it simply isn't 'limiting' the Peaks, thereby not compromising the Dynamic range :)

"The CD has been mastered without the use of a ‘fuzz pedal’, which increases the clarity and dynamic range of the recordings."

:)

We don't know what noise reduction or dynamic range companding/expansion was used on the 15IPS tape in the first place. Maybe dbx.
That comment about limiter was referring to that Chameleons CD, not that DSD recording of Kind of Blue

As with a lot of remasters they tend to vary from album to album

For the 1996 remasters, LOG. BIA and the debut are fine, Making Movies and Communique not so good to the point of being worth avoiding.

I'm still looking for an original release of those two.

For LOG the Sony SBM release is flawless in every respect.

As a general rule the compilations are always worth avoiding.
Are you referring to this one? Looks like that Ludwig remaster was the SBM one?

Mastered at Masterdisk N.Y.
Remastered at Gateway Mastering.
SBM Super Bit Mapping
℗ 1996 Mercury Records Ltd (London)

According to another thread, that Ludwig series seems like its been brickwalled (i'll still check it out):

yes that's the one.

I used to listen to this version as my go-to for The Turn of a Friendly Card, but I don't think it's the best mastering. It's very dark sounding and it also runs slower than all other versions available.
Upon trying again, I agree. The HDAD is too dark sounding.

For Turn of a Friendly Card and IRobot my favorite masterings are the original LP's. Not sure if it is familiarity or something else but they just sound "right" to me. This is unfortunate as these albums have a lot quiet parts which can be suboptimal for LP playback.

Did get hold of the 2001 remaster of Al Stewart Year of the Cat this is a really good remaster way better than the original. Did compare side by side. Original sounds relative flat. The remaster sounds Effortless dynamic.
