The Fairchild 670 was a very early stereo hardware compressor used for disc cutting. It has 20 tubes and 13 transformers.

There are not many in circulation today, they are tremendously expensive, so people make hardware recreations and software plugins. Compressors are by their nature nonlinear. So all the controls and the level interact in a very complex way. What is interesting in this video about 19:, they discuss using lookup tables to control the software.

The company makes their own Unfairchild hardware version and it took them a year to build and tune the plugin. It may be relevant to our discussion of DSP, and all the harmonics that come from analog devices. The video also discusses mid-side bus compression. Vinyl, especially vintage vinyl, was processed through these compressors. Releases to vinyl, CD, then all our streaming formats, including AM and FM are likely to have been processed differently.
