Eversolo suggest that using the XLR and RCA outputs simultaneously can degrade the sound. Can this be true?

It's very often true!
If both the XLR & RCA connectors are feed from the same output stage, connecting the RCA will unbalance the XLR signal..

This is something that strikes me as avoidable though. Give both RCA and XLR their own output series resistors and there should be very little interaction aside from the potential effects of output loading in terms of opamp distortion performance (and even that shouldn't be much of an issue given that modern opamps should drive loads of 3 kOhms and up perfectly fine).

Thank you. So using the rca out for my sub and the xlr out to my power amp is not recommendable

Where does it say that in the A6 manual?

From the A6 manual:

A little ambiguous.

While it doesn't matter with the Eversolo,
With many other XLR outputs, yes you can connect both the RCA & XLR outputs, but as soon as you attach anything to the RCA output it will unbalance the XLR output.

“… but as soon as you attach anything to the RCA output it will unbalance the XLR output.”
Seriously? I had no idea. But I understand that this is not the case for Eversolo, or?

Some units have separate buffered outputs for RCA & XLR so it's not a problem.
Other units have resistor dividing networks for the RCA & XLR outputs. So when you attach another component into the RCA output, it unbalances the XLR output. You will still get an XLR signal, but won't be well balanced.

I will write to Eversolo, that scenario of unbalancing balanced appears highly unlikely.

I sincerely doubt there will be any cost, I will ask and post their reply.

Well, something relevant: Iʼll get my Eversolo A6 Gen 2 ME in a couple of days and have "almost" the same question:

I want to have XLR and RCA cables plugged in to the analog out connectors of the A6 simultaneously. The XLR connected to an Musical Fidelity M8XI intergrated amp, for pure stereo listening, and the RCA to a Marantz SR 7012 AV-Receiver, for dolby surround upmixing listening, because my system is a 5.0 system.

I donʼt intend to use the both analog outputs of the A6 simultaneously to hear music. Either I want to hear stereo, or 5.0. But the XLR and RCA cables should stay plugged at the A6 all the time, so I donʼt have to disconnect the ones or the others everytime I switch from stereo to 5.0 listening.

How about that? Is there any degradation of sound if both sort of cables stay plugged but not being used simultaneously?

So still no definitive answer to this yet? I just got my A8 and was hoping to use the XLRs to feed my Bryston 4b and the RCAs to feed my SVS subwoofer but now I'm not so sure. I haven't introduced the sub into the system yet so looking for some solid advice.

Did you try adding the sub yet? I'm also interested in this.

The other thing that I'm interested to know is if the Eversolo app allows you to set the high pass filter so that you can only send the low frequencies via the RCA and the high frequencies via the XLR?

I find it so bizarre that they didn't add a sub out to the gen 2s. The WiiM Ultra costs significantly less and has a sub out and a brilliant way of controlling the eq and hpf.

Haven't added the sub yet but I think your suggestion about the lack of a sub out is quite valid. I do think that your idea about a high pass filter setting for the RCAs is a great idea and would be worth passing along to Eversolo. It might be able to be added via a firmware update.
