Hello all,

Looking for advice on whether to keep or send back the A8. I've been experiencing a crackle/pop sound when I switch between between the input sources. I have tried the obvious: switching speaker wire, speakers, XLR cables. Nothing works. This noise disappears when I put my NAD integrated back in and the a8 out. Only the right speaker is popping. Should I send back for a new one? I still have 2 weeks to return. I haven't experienced that annoyance for a few years.

I hear a click through the ( active ) speakers when I change input, but it is just that one ‘click’.

Keith,
I hear clicks too, but this comes after the click. It's more of a crackle sound.

Actually, I hear a series of clicks. 2 fast and then 1 before it stops. It does it for each input I switch to.

Similar to mine A-8 into active speakers ( hypex) does it happen if you are only using XLR out?

I just disconnected my sub, Earc and bluray player. I get 3 fast relay clicks and then 2 clicks back to back. A total of 5 clicks after switching through various input sources.. I guess I could live with it if it was normal and other people were experiencing the same thing.

I think that is normal, the A-8s relays click when you adjust volume at least five separate clicks when you start the machine , three clicks from the machine itself and a louder click through the actual speakers, but importantly that doesn’t continue , silence after you switch inputs.

Ok, thanks! I just disconnected everything only leaving the A8 powered on and it does it the same. I appreciate your feedback. I really like this machine. With that info, looks like it's a keeper. Do you think the minor pops I'm getting through my speakers when switching sources are benign. These are just single pops.

disregard the speakers part. you already answered that. Thanks again Keith!

Single pop good well not bad if the popping were to continue…
I like the unit very much I will like it even more when it gains Roon certification!
Keith

Hello Keith,

Don't have Roon. Maybe something I will get in the near future. Quick question. Do you know the output impedance of the A8? I ordered the Magician Monoceros and plan on using as a PRE. I researched and couldn't find anything definitive.

Anthony I don’t I can ask, why use another preamp when the A-8 is a preamp?
Keith

I’m crazy. At least I think I am. Just curious to see what a separate good preamp would sound like. I guess I don’t want to spend 4300 on a matrix audio X2, so I’m hoping that getting this preamp might satisfy me if I see a sound difference. Don’t get me wrong, the A8 sounds fantastic I figure if there was no sound difference I can just send it back, and hopefully keep the A8 for at least a couple years. To be Be honest, I would really like to get my hands on the matrix audio X2 pure

Thanks Keith.

You can’t get ‘better’ than audibly transparent, you might be able to find a really poorly designed preamp which adds its own dollop of distortion, is that what you consider ‘a good separate ‘preamp?
And why would you consider this is better because it costs more?

Keith

Curiosity got the better of me. I think I'm going to keep the A8 regardless. It's nice to look at! After reading more, the preamp in the A8 is pretty good. My thinking is that a dedicated pre may be better. That's what I intend on finding out.

Anthony

Without banging on you can’t get ‘better’ than audibly transparent unless you consider that adding audible distortion is better?
If you are anxious to spend money then loudspeakers and their interaction with the room.

This is what I love about ASR. A dude that sells equipment for a living trying to convince someone to NOT buy a piece of equipment. In any case, in my way of thinking, given the A8 is audibly transparent, adding something else to the chain just represents an opportunity to make things worse without any scientific chance to make things better from a SQ standpoint. Best case is that the SQ stays the same and you are out $$. Why waste your money? As Keith said, if it is burning a hole in your pocket, spend it on transducers (or maybe booze...).
