Once again our extended family Eurovision 2022 voting was nowhere *near* what happened in the real world. We had the top 4 of France,Norway, Moldova and [parochially] Australia. Looks that we largely went for the 'entertainment' factor and we all got vaguely excited when Moldova sat on 3rd place for a little while.
All of us were connected online/remotely as opposed to other years. It put quite a bit of a dampener on the festivities.
The one that ellicited the most comment and hoohaaa was Norway with the banana wolves. What can I say. It was a crazy few hours (that we'll never get back..)

Consequence of the map projection isn't it. (Mercator projection?) The further a land is from the equator, the more it is stretched to flatten the surface of a sphere. (look at how big antarctica is on a map compared to a globe)

It exaggerates the size of northern/southern places compared to more equatorial ones. Since Australia is closer to the equator than Europe, when you move it to compare the size, it has to be stretched to match the stretching applied to Europe by the map projection.

Righto, we have an absolute ball doing the 'Eurovision' theme party. A house full of people of all ages, with host country themed food, house decoration themed similarly and the all important 'voting'. It is no surprise that our votes never even get close to the official 'winner' but we just don't care.
The voting board is usually kept by the more junior members of the family and it's a room packed with people giving a simple 'thumbs up or thumbs down' vote.
We're having a ball as an extended family with friends and we have fond memories of the years we've had it. [I recall the freaked out reaction from the petrol station when a son in law dressed up as Conchita Wurst needed to get fuel; and then the rest of them piled out of the car.] I reckon the CCTV footage would have been 'interesting'.
So, this year, yum, bring on the Italian food!! We'll work something out if Covid throws a spanner in the works.

The burning question for me is, as an Aussie, the thread title is disturbing. It should be:

It's the internet now, so you can't avoid it. Although I wouldn't have noticed it except for ASR here. I didn't notice anything on tv news. OTOH, Britain's Got Talent has been on SABC for the last few weeks.
...And, also OTOH, the Grammy awards got way more coverage.

Yes, at the same time, internet provides more control.
The thing with this, it's pop music. I shouldn't be dismayed or confused. And it's europop. Obviously, it doesn't matter where I go, pop music radio is no good for me. I left that 50 years ago.
So it's all the same. (This europop or whatever.)
But what is pop? Does it mean popular, the general population? Maybe, but most of the music I listen to...seems quite popular. [And average age of listeners/fans is definitely 20-something.] DJ/producers from all these countries, and what they play is also all the same [and that includes those that are not in Europe].............and it's all the result of American history - history of yesterday and going back for more than a hundred years. ...This pop music is also related to it, but barely.

pop / popular: means general public, they like music. But then there are the others for whom it is more than just 'like'.
