Eurovision 2022 : Who are you rooting for?

Righto, we have an absolute ball doing the 'Eurovision' theme party. A house full of people of all ages, with host country themed food, house decoration themed similarly and the all important 'voting'. It is no surprise that our votes never even get close to the official 'winner' but we just don't care.
The voting board is usually kept by the more junior members of the family and it's a room packed with people giving a simple 'thumbs up or thumbs down' vote.
We're having a ball as an extended family with friends and we have fond memories of the years we've had it. [I recall the freaked out reaction from the petrol station when a son in law dressed up as Conchita Wurst needed to get fuel; and then the rest of them piled out of the car.] I reckon the CCTV footage would have been 'interesting'.
So, this year, yum, bring on the Italian food!! We'll work something out if Covid throws a spanner in the works.

Australia's in the eurovision competition. It's no where near Europe. Is it the only non-european country in the competition?

Why? Because Aussies have a long history of loving eurovision. My wife and I love eurovision. We are Aussies!!

Dense 'merican that I am, I somehow assumed Eurovision 2022 had something to do with Soccer, since I otherwise had no idea.

My level of occasional Density:

Last July 4, in Texas (after the soccer games), with wife's sister, whose husband is from England (he watches a lot of soccer), someone on the TV (he has a BBC subscription) was doing these great covers of David Bowie tunes.

I commented as such.

Dave said "It is David Bowie".

Ok, well, duh. Didn't look like him at the time.

It was interesting to read (in the now-previous thread) what Eurovision meant in historical terms. Also appears a number of decent performers have come up that way (which I missed at the time).

My only real awareness of it is occasional moments of alternative radio stations here (in Sydney) taking the piss, and the general level of kitsch common to many award/competition shows, but my taste is not everyone's, so enjoy.

Portugal was most to my taste. Sweden's chorus is strong, but the verses are weaker.
But I don't pay that much attention to this, it's more of play in the background thing..

I don't mind Ukraine winning either, this is obviously to show some solidarity with the country. It's never been just about the music, neighboring countries are for instance very likely to vote for each other.

Off the top of my head, Azerbaijan and Israel are also non-European participants, and Turkey is only barely in Europe.

As for the result this time, I'm thankful we (UK) won't have to host it next year. I'd rather see my tax money spent on something more useful.

Personally I think this is an incredibly postive message for the people of Europe to send to the people of Ukraine. And to the people of Russia - if they are able to receive it.

(Although they got the scaling wrong. Australia is almost as big as the entirety of Europe, and if you account for landmass only, it is much larger.)
