They released the LC2. I heard them at CAF this past weekend.
The designer, Lucca Chesky was there himself to present the speakers. The LC2 MSRP for $2k/pair. Lucca said the difference between the LC1 and LC2 is better parts, bigger cabinet, bigger drivers and hits lower.
So, how were they?
First, keep in mind this is at a show. Where most rooms aren't set up well, standing waves, ringing, boomy and muddy bass is present, by my estimate, in at least 50% of the rooms. Then there's always people walking in and out of each room all the time. Each room is competing with other rooms, so each room is blasting music. And there's a limited number of sweet spots.
Granted the Chesky room is one of the hotel rooms and not a lobby room, so it's much smaller. But when I walked in, the room was PACKED, probably the most packed room there. All the attendees were impressed, with one older gentlemen (one know, the reality is that this hobby hasn't attracted much young folks in the last 30 years) I sat next to was floored, he was very very impressed. He just couldn't believe how good these speakers sounded to him.
So what are my thoughts on the Chesky LC2?
They sounded relatively good.
What does "relatively good" mean? Allowed me to explain.
First, this room has curtains draped on all 4 walls, I cannot tell you what was behind the curtains, were there any absorption panels and/or bass traps? I don't know. But Lucca did confirmed that there is no sub nor DSP.
Second, I was not sitting in the sweet spot so I can't judge imaging. Because the room was draped in curtains, most reflections are damped. I observed an absence of room resonance, so this room had good acoustics compared to other rooms. Because auditory memory is short, there is no frame of reference with my systems at home, comprised of good speakers and good room acoustics. The only reference I have are the other rooms at the show and as I said earlier, more than half of those rooms sounded terrible.
Third, the tracks played were mostly house/techno-type of music. As such the bass was showcased. And the bass sounded pretty good. But here is the thing, many people who are not trained, when they hear room modes, especially in the absence of ringing and boomy/muddy bass, thinks that the bass is hitting really low, but when in fact, it can be just 100-200Hz. I can't say for sure if the bass I heard were room modes or not, but definitely did not hear any ringing.
Was it one of the better rooms? Yes. Was I impressed? No. Would I buy these LC2? Hell no, especially you have so many other amazing options at this price point, with Genelec, Neumann, KEF and Ascilab.
