But with EQ enabled, the signal will be about 6 dB quieter than with EQ off. He should create one flat (no-EQ) profile that applies a similar ~6 dB attenuation, and then switch between that and the EQ profile.

No wonder he has trouble picking out EQ on or off. X2HR is preety good out of the box.

Good call. And you're right that the adjustments are pretty small on this headphone. Listening for small changes in the treble is pretty tricky when you're using music. Agree that this thread is not surprising with this context.

No, with Hifiman's it would be obvious: much more bass after EQ and filled in 1-3kHz where the hearing is very sensitive.

While on Fidelio bass is weak even after EQ and the biggest change is around 5kHz, a very narrow peak. This should still be audible, but not transforming.

I'd set the Preamp to -6.5 (or however much it needs so that "Peak gain" reports roughly -1dB), otherwise it looks good.
