The Best Electronic Music on Bandcamp: November 2021
By Joe Muggs · December 03, 2021

https://daily.bandcamp.com/best-electronic/the-best-electronic-music-on-bandcamp-november-2021

0026932040_0

It’s a UK-heavy lineup this month, with folk trance and bleep jazz from Leeds, dense dub from Bristol, Cornish acid, Southampton grime, and no less than three very different bits of sub-bass-heavy London house groove. But don’t worry—we’re not getting too parochial: you’ve also got heavy techno from Paraguay via New York and even heavier techno from L.A. via Japan, Spain, Mexico and Chile; some gorgeous Catalonian distortion; slithering Turkish soundsystem music; and a set of uncategorizable mavericks channeled via Dublin. And yes, of course, at least one of the Brits herein lives in Berlin.

Surprise, William Orbit in the list:

Starbeam EP
It’s good to have William Orbit back in action after becoming a pop producer for hire sent him off the rails. Amazingly, he seems to have completely reset, picking up exactly where he left off in the mid ‘90s before his work with Madonna and All Saints sent him global. These new tracks are full of the melodies and swooshes of commercial trance, often without beats—whether by accident or design, they slot into the newer generation of “deconstructed trance”—but there’s a delight in the sound design and singing synths that takes it way beyond the generic. Even better is the slow Balearic dub of “Wordsworth,” as warm-bath satisfying as anything from Orbit’s classic productions and remixes.

Greg Surmacz
Timelines Part 2

1638636570501.png

Thanks to his band Paper Tiger, Leeds resident Greg Surmacz has long been a quiet hero in the interzone between live jazz and the Flying Lotus-adjacent “beat scene.” This year, on his two solo albums, he’s refined his style even further—and on the second installment, he’s achieved a brilliant personal statement. Chiptune bleeps blur into lengthy, lyrical sax lines; jumpy broken beats manage to blend with laid back pastoral chords. It’s incredibly coherent—and very, very lovely.

Episode 25 featuring @formosapgh of @jellyfishpgh created a beautiful mix just for me and you. Bright beats with a nod to the psychedelic concept my Space Between Spaces show is built on. When in Pittsburg PA, make a point to check out their events as they have been going strong for nearly a decade. My mix completes the show in hour two.

When UK Garage was so good...

"Nice dubby UK garage from 2000. Was on a 10" DJs out there will remember."

Large Joints - Thinkin' (Zoot Master's Vocal)

It sounds so different from Soundcloud. I think I prefer it on Soundcloud but I got used to it after a couple minutes. Youtube sounds more rattley, less smooth. [?]

track 2 here, about <1 minute in:

ENG: Dubplate king, Riz La Teef, a major player in the blossoming resurgence of UKG and 140 in the UK club scene, joins us for an exclusive mix.
FRA: Le roi des dubplates, Riz La Teef, acteur majeur du renouveau de l’UKG de la scène britannique, nous rejoint pour un set exclusif.

https://soundcloud.com/juanitasnyc%2Fjuanitas-mix-57-dj-healthy
Juanita's mix 57 with DJ Healthy @dj-healthyy

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I’m a manual laborer... haha. I also DJ & organize shows, book artists to play in Japan, etc.
I just announced that I'm starting my own label.
I hope to book artists in Japan again starting next year!

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. I moved here in 2013, moved back to Japan for 2 years, and then came back.
I feel lucky to have met a lot of talented people over the years and hope to meet more!

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I included music that I've been into recently.
It's a mix of intensity, beauty, cuteness and various kinds of music but somehow it can all be tied together with this passing moment.
I hope you enjoy :)

Telephones presents: Tempo Tiempo Trax 1

Mr Telephones pumps up the pace, [...]This time closing in on the 150bpm mark, with the raw pump of "Blue-Tek", a funky oddball-roller hybridizing ghettotech, detroit soul, balearic and italo house. Flip wax for the trippy soundscapey ambient techno-trip "FV555", speeding through a hazy highway, with the forest on one side, and ocean on the other. Both sides neatly wrapped up with trippy reprise-versions. Pressed at 45 for max flex!

Jon Dixon – Detroit Get Down

Jazz is one of the primary tributaries flowing into Detroit dance music, and this confluence is epitomized in the work of jazz keyboardist and producer Jon Dixon. Dixon studied under Detroit R&B/jazz legend Marcus Belgrave as well as Mike Banks, and his "high-tech jazz" records just keep getting better. This year, he released the Detroit Get Down EP on his own 4evr 4wrd label, and it was one of the best Detroit records of the year. The opening track, "On Your Own," features an instantly-recognizable Moodymann vocal, along with a graceful horn solo from Marcus's son Kasan, which brings the Motor City's deeply-rooted jazz and house traditions into perfect harmony.—M.M.

Snoh Aalegra - Do 4 Love

via SOULECTION Radio Show #532, first track...

https://soundcloud.com/soulection%2Fsoulection-radio-show-532-andre-power-takeover

Snoh Sheri Nowrozi, better known by her stage name, Snoh Aalegra, is a Swedish singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles.

In 2014, she became a protégé of Prince after he discovered her music and reached out to her.[19] He mentored her until his death in 2016.[7][20]

Shahrzad Fooladi | In February 2015, Aalegra said she had changed her legal name to Snoh Nowrozi.[21]
She added "Aalegra" to her stage name because it means "joyful" in Italian (changing the spelling of "allegra" to make it her own), and because there was already an artist named Snoh.

Snoh Aalegra : NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Better at https://www.npr.org/2020/02/18/805478361/snoh-aalegra-tiny-desk-concert?jwsource=cl
Sounds better too. (Not volume, because NPR original video to JW Player instead of whatever Youtube does.)

Almost without trying, Snoh Aalegra has an unforgettable presence. Strolling into NPR's music department on the day of her Tiny Desk Concert debut, the striking Iranian-Swedish singer donned Off-White Nike Dunks, baggy jeans, dewy skin and a sleek ponytail, carrying herself with the kind of camera-ready, cool-girl aura that silenced a mass of people waiting for her. Even with all that, the moment she started to sing is when the real beauty shone through.

Like a fragile candle flame in a pool of melting wax, the texture of Aalegra's voice mesmerizes without overpowering. The 32-year-old has spent years perfecting that balance. Drawing her musical cues from Brandy and Sade while racking up a list of collaborators such as Vince Staples, James Fauntleroy and, most recently Pharrell Williams, Aalegra always finds her groove in the unexpected pockets of emotion. Much of her latest album, 2019's -Ugh, those feels again, is an ode to the comfortability of love, one that's even more appreciated within the close confines of the Tiny Desk.

On this day in particular, Aalegra's tracks were stripped of their punchier, album-version kick drums and trap echoes. In their absence, it's Aalegra's delicate vocal runs and chemistry with her supporting singers that resonated most. "I Want You Around" and "Whoa," which usually rest on a bed of glitchy, spiraling production, felt lighter thanks to the dreamy string section, and by the time she sang her concert closer, "Find Someone Like You," the room was in full swoon. It's clear that at just 16 minutes, Aalegra and her crew knew how to create a memorable moment.
