Thanks for this test Amir.:)

Massive, and I mean massive resonance set into tweeter, creating screeching sound that was nearly as loud as the notes themselves!
Hm, does that song/track have so much dynamic, transients that this tweeter can't handle without it starting to clearly distort/resonate?

But if that's the case, another speaker/tweeter should show the same problem, but you say:
.....that normally don't bother any speaker I have tested.

Broken tweeter? But on the other hand, you measured the speaker so it would have been visible then.
Midrange driver that is broken, or is about to break. Audible break ups in the upper midrange due to a faulty crossover.....Now I'm speculating wildly, but it seems like there is something wrong with the speaker.

Strange.

I looked at his frequency response measurements. His is always smoother than mine which would hide some of that dip.

In my last issue with ELAC, similar hypothesis was made that mine was unique but then another reviewer heard it too. I felt the tweeter and it is solidly mounted in there.
Even assuming that, Erin's distortion charts for a three way tower are pretty standard, even on the good end for a tower of this size, whereas yours show big issues especially in the bass. And while some variability is to be expected in that measurement, I do think this difference is more likely due to a difference in the speakers measured.

For reference, this is Erin's HD chart at 96 dB, it's pretty well sorted.

To me, this is a poor performer. I seen internet jockeys praise this thing to the sky, comparing it invidiously to things like Kef Concerta, LS 50 and R3 meta, among others, and now that we have a real set of measurements we see the Elac has a cheap, distorting tweeter, uneven in-room response to the point where each driver has its very own, dramatically distinct slope, and a huge resonance around 1k. Oh, and don't play it above 91 db! It's a piece of crap! Definitely not cheap at $1300 pr, either!

Let all the cheap audio men on the internet say differently, and tell you how smart you are to take a pass on those Kefs, Revels, Ascis, and Ascend Sierras forr this brand! Guess what? We have the numbers, Randy!

Great review, Amir.

What's most strange in this affair, is that nothing from the measurements could really predict the terrible noise Amir has heard (or I still don't know how to read them).
Except if the music was playing at 100dB or more...
Or could it be perhaps a thing a multitone test could have detected?

Too bad ...all of us cheapskate (s) here were hoping for something better. Thanks to the Misses for putting up with all this equipment.

Hmmm.....makes you wonder when the AsciLab stuff will be available and if there is a tower in the works?

My guess is, perhaps not the tweeter, but higher order distortion harmonics from woofer/cabinet resonances (>=5th).

Interesting case indeed. These seem to have gotten good reviews on other forums, so I expected a better showing here.

Higher sensitivity speaker but the trade off is that it can’t play loud?!?

Extra points for the wife hearing the issue, albeit not from the kitchen, but you can't have everything!

The tweeter issue puts a damper on it, hard to get past that I imagine for a lot of folks. Not ideal!

Ditto

The ELAC DF63 may be suitable for the member using an amplifier putting out just a few watts per channel:

Wow, surprisingly poor after Erin's review

My thoughts also. That midrange looks identical to the woofs, is it? The individual driver responses look the same .If so its the wrong driver for midrange. and probably has a lot of HF breakup at higher power.

From inside

That's very different. I think Amir's sample may be damaged somehow...
actually rather complimentary from Erin's side and more contrasting from Amir's side.... the question is what explains this @amirm ?
