Hi everyone.

I have recently brought a pair of pair of elac connex dcb41 and they have an awful hiss when pausing audio or low volume audio. I can hear when the audio is cut of by the speakers with thwp sound. I am using them on my desk as desktop speakers.
Does any one know how I can get rid of or mitigate the hiss?
I have done some research and it's not clear if this an issue with retail active speakers in general or with this speaker model.
I saw on reddit a claim that by removing a wire would fix the issue but the details are sparse on this.
Would a power conditioner fix this issue?
Or is it as I fear an issue with these types of active speakers?
I do an a pair of Adam d3v and do not have this issue at all.
Should I return them ir try to get them fixed if possible?

Without details it's hard to say for sure but given that hiss is typically caused by the noise floor of the amps combined with the direct connection to the speakers drivers (no passive crossover to attenuate anything) I'm not sure how removing a wire could help.

Nope.

This is a common issue with active speakers.

Yes, I believe Adam Audio's "tweeter gating" feature is how they managed to eliminate hiss on those. The tweeter gating had its own issues that had to be addressed with a firmware update, but largely it works great.

If the hiss is overly bothersome I would return them rather than embarking on a likely fruitless mission to eliminate the hiss.

Agree with @kyuu comments. I am not familiar with these exact speakers but if they have some type of volume control try turning it down which can help. This assumes you have enough gain elsewhere so they can play loud enough. Unfortunately many reasonably priced active speakers have this issue. If you move up to Neumann or Genelec they are usually better, especially their higher end models.

That's fair, I did neglect to mention trying to mess with gain staging to see if you can ameliorate the hiss: turn the source up and the speaker down. I doubt that'll get you where you want to be, but you never know.

1. Set your PC/interface to about 60–80% volume
2. Keep the monitor gain as low as possible, but still loud enough for your listening distance
3. Use balanced cables (XLR/TRS) if possible
4. Remove potential interference sources (phones, power supplies, Wi‑Fi routers)
5. If the noise increases when the PC is under load, check for a grounding issue
