Edifier MR5 Review

whatta hell? i thought for a second that a measurment is for edifier mr4 or mr3..
why does it drop off below 100hz fast like that.
he says that his ears verify what his measuring mic measures.. And that he doesn't believe that edifier has lied, but ..

Faulty speaker? Poor measurement technique? The measurements in the video look deeply suspect - see post #1 for bass to see bass rising a couple of dB below 100Hz before falling back again by ~60Hz and falling off below that.

"using some close miced measurements to try to take my room and the acoustics of my room out of the measurements of MR5'S I couldn't get flat response from these past the 98 herz mark. In other words the bass started to drop quite rapidly everywhere below 100 hz."
Mic close to the 'mid' cone on the front, missing the contribution from the woofer vents on the side or its port at the back? Again see post #1 for the contribution of each driver and port.

Yeah, I strongly suspect that the Youtuber is making a mistake with their measurements.

00:10 (second 10) of this video and i was ironically punched by the bass oomph on MR5. Reduced the volume and watched.
He's got rolloff at 100Hz but that's what he's got in other reviews on his channel. D3V got same chart in his measurement. Another basic home measurement with UNI-T U353:
.
Good for anyone if the measurements are repetable.

For me the speaker is very bassy, clearly audible from ~40Hz so I agree "you don't need T5S":

Hello y'all.

I pulled the trigger on a pair of MR5s as they seemed to be a great all-rounder option that doesn't break the bank. Unfortunately, I'm having some very, very weird issues with the sound that I was hoping some of you might help with.

To put it simply, a lot of the bass sounds boomy, disconnected and somehow resonant? It makes a deep "uuuooomm" noise when certain frequencies are played, and very loud as well. Some content is a lot more affected than other.

I have recorded how it sounds as best as I can, and, when checking to see whether the effect was coming through, discovered that playing the recording itself on the MR5 made it immensely worse so now the problem is very clear. Maybe even too clear, it sounds like a demonic whale.

Baseline:

Playing the baseline through the speakers and recording that:

Probably room mode. You can try to test the mr5 in another place or room and if the deep uuuoomm is gone, it is 100% room mode.

I have literally one other room in my apartment lmao

Will try it later tonight. Did you manage to see the videos?

The baseline is already humming crazily, what room is it, a jail?;)
I have speakers right next to wall and i don't have that echo humming. i barely hear resonance in the original video (30, 50Hz) if i use the worst settings (no desktop mode, acoustic space 0) and loudest volume, but it's not reverbish.

Heh, almost. An old tiny aparment, walls are solid brick.

Maybe some accoutic pannels or foam stands could help?

I have ordered some foam pads, though they will take a good while to arrive.

In the meantime, I have brought them to my one other room and put them on an ultra-jumbo foam pad, aka my mattress, and away from the wall. The result was an immensely better sound, but I do think it's still a bit uohm-y/echo-y.

Baseline on the desk, in the office:

Big question is whether they are faulty or it really is just the room.

I agree that the difference between your desk and bed is huge.

If you think your speaker has defect, it means the defect on certain freq is amplified by room mode when place on your desk.
Have you adjust the bass level or play with the app for the speaker?

Sounds like an issue on the speaker.

It sounds like an issue on the speaker itself. Even when I placed mine on my desk without any foams, it doesn't produce any weird sound like yours even without any settings tweaked from the app or the speaker itself. I don't even use foams and just use some books to elevate my speakers and even then it doesn't come close to producing any weird sounds like this.

Increasing the cutoff frequency to 100 MHz and acoustic space to -4 db did diminish the effect, but not eliminate it.

I will have the foam pads soon enough and record another test. I suspect @Tio is right, it is a defect in the speaker and it's being massively amplified by the desk.

It still sounded a tiny bit weird on the bed and far away from the wall. If that didn't kill the problem, no foam will.

Hi guys. I just bought a pair of MR5 to replace my old pioneer bookshelf speakers. I want to ask that since the MR5 has a downward firing sub, can i put it on top of insulation foam? I intend to use the foam to isolate the speakers with my desk. Will there any negative effect doing this?

Nope, shouldn't be any issue.

It seems to be on foam in this review right?
