Edifier MR4 measurements (It's probably been upgraded.)

Hi, do you hear that peak at lower volumes or is it only on the loud stuff (or transient bursts, like the loud explosions you mention)?

The MR4 is a nice, flat, speaker but it can't do loud. It's possible that what you are hearing is distortion - and some people are more sensitive to that.
i have the knob at around 40% i would say i listen at moderate to low volumes, i use monitor mode and just found out knobs behind only work for music mode

Strange, for me the knobs work in both modes.
Without the sub, I was using Monitor mode with bass knob at the max value.

I'm not sure what's happening with your speakers. It could be a nasty off-angle reflection, unit variation issue or even your sensitivity to a particular frequency range.

Try to figure out the offending frequency range, or better, measure your speakers at the listening position using a measurement mic. Dayton imm6 costs 40 bucks.

I’m not OP but I want to chime in and say I got my MR4’s 2 months ago and use them 99% of the time in monitor mode: the dials on the back work just fine, they change the audio as expected in music mode as well.

Note that this is with either RCA or 3.5mm in, don’t currently have a balanced out source to test but I suspect the treble and bass dials would work the same.

I've used them with RCA and TRS and tone controls work with both music and monitor mode.

  • I come from China, the domestic price of mr4 is only 435rmb, I am very shocked to see your price

Hello, I would like to know if mr4 with t5 subwoofer is a viable option for casual sound looking for a certain fidelity, I do not intend to use it professionally. I would also like to know how to connect everything, would I need a preamp? Thanks

I've used the MR4s with a Presonus Sub8 BT which is a similar class to the T5 (8 inch sub), but has a high pass filter so the MR4 don't play below 80 Hz.

By doing this I'm getting Bluetooth connectivity and slightly reduced distortion in the MR4, but I can imagine T5 could also work.

Both MR4 and T5 are class II electrical devices - they don't have a ground plug so you don't need to worry about ground loops so much.

Connect your source to the sub and then your sub's RCS outputs to the MR4's RCA inputs.
On the MR4, use neutral or even reduce bass level on the knob.

You could also get a cheap measurement mic (like Dayton imm-6) to help with subwoofer placement or equalizing the sub if your placement options are limited.

Lastly, if you don't have the MR4 yet, consider the MR3. Through DSP and the new app they have, they allow better finetuning of the crossover between sub and the speakers.

Just FYI for science: MR4 vs Kali LP-6 2nd Wave (ignore 75-125hz room problem)

Nice! I've upgraded from MR4 to Kali IN-8 V2 myself and gave the MR4 away. I had to keep the sub, though.
My sub was Presonus Sub 8 BT, with just an 8 inch driver and 50W RMS of power, but the placement of Kalis is unlucky in my current setup, there's nothing below 60-70 Hz or so.

I won't try to explain the difference in "imaging", "detail" etc. but what I immediately noticed was how non-fatiguing the treble is in the Kalis.

Yeh a sub would help me fill that room bass null too, but my neighbours wouldnt like one i guess :D

Its a nice upgrade though, MR4 already pretty good but the Kalis, especially IN-8s are really on a different level.

what is the setting that you use for the MR4? Also what smoothing that you apply on the graph? Thank you.
Mr4 were used at neutral settings, variable smoothing was applied to both measurements.

i just bought another pair of mr4 last month. im fairly certain edifier has GONE BACK to the old tuning (i know this is not an old unit because it uses the new box design)
(trace (l1) is erinaudiocorner's estimated in room response from a few years ago)

What if you do a closer measurement (1m away from the speaker) and gate the response? Would that valley in the 2-3Khz region still appear? Now that you mentioned it, @ninetylol from a few posts ago also has a similar trend.
Is this good or bad?
Bad. According to the first post, Edifier has (or should have) fixed this with updated DSP tuning. Now apparently it might be a lottery whether your MR4 sounds right or not
Except for this flaw, it's hard to beat for the price point.
