My current AVR does not support 4k passthrough, and my x4700h gets cancelled, so I am thinking that maybe I can get the eArc audio extrator, so the setup would look like this
XSX/PS5 => LG CX => eArc audio extractor => avr => possibly amp => speakers or
LG CX => eArc audio extractor => avr => possibly amp => speakers

would that work? is there a better/simpler way do to it without having to spend $2000 for an amp?
Thanks

Yeah this is what the thenaudio sharc is designed to do, I use it for my LG C1 to Denon X4100W
I have the HDMI plugged into the earc output, and the usb power plugged into my Nvidia shield because occasionally there are issues with TV not seeing earc output when the sharc doesn't boot up fast enough (TVs usb power turns off with TV) - tho you could just plug the usb into a wall charger as an alternative.

Looked it up. 188$ before tax is quite steep for a temporary solution. Any cheaper alternative?

I ordered a 2x1 HDMI earc audio extractor from aliexpress for $28 after coupon. It took 2 weeks and arrived today. I did a quick test and it works quite well, without any noticeable delay. So far, so good.
only one downside that my AVR does not recognize the audio stream as Dolby Digital Plus etc as usual. But for $28 can't complain. this will last me a while until I can afford a proper AVR setup.

After some fiddling, I was able to make it process Dolby Digital +, sounds much better than THX Cinema mode.

Could you please share which one you had purchased? Or one like it?

OREI.COM make a variety of extractors. You need to read the details carefully to ensure you get the one you want for your particular purpose.

I have been using this one to enable my non 4K receiver to work with 4K video sources. Basically it just allows the audio to split off and sent to the receiver separately.

I appreciate it and have saved this one. I was curious about where they might have gotten one as well on AliExpress because I do shop there from time to time for audio items and it looks like it was quite a bit less expensive too.

I have a question on how this works for the second case that you mentioned (i.e. LG CX => eArc audio extractor => avr => possibly amp => speakers) cause I'm thinking of running a similar setup).

Do you plug the TV into one of the inputs and then connect the hdmi output to an AVR (that doesn't support ARC)? Does this then allow you control the AVR's volume using the TV's remote?

Also, if I were to use the toslink output and pipe that into some sort of DAC, will it also allow for volume control from the TV?

Yes, the one I linked provides 2 HDMI outputs, 1 for the "untouched" video and 1 for the audio with the video stream removed.
It does allow CEC switching over HDMI which can allow the TV remote to control the AVR. However, I would not say it is guaranteed to work as I have found CEC barely works consistently between manufacturers regardless of including an audio splitter.
