Having "volume control" means there's still only digital data going from the computer to the dac. Volume control, in this regard, can change the values which represent your music to smaller or larger values. If you "turn down the volume", all that happens is your music player software (or OS or whatever is controlling volume) will make all numbers that represent your music, smaller. Turn volume up, and those numbers get bigger, maybe up to their maximum (2^16 in case of 44/16 data). There's no "analog" volume controlling going on.

What does that matter? The CD of any track you listen to will be at similar level to the one on Spotify /tidal etc. So if your phone is at max volume into your dac, won't be much different to the CD into your DAC

if you use digital output like coax and optical it goes to a dac.
If you use rca output it goes to a preamp.
Your phone is meant to work all on it s own, it's a little computer, so it can use external devices but you have to use the appropriate software and / or condition of use

Not sure of the difference(s) of the E30 DAC or the D50S, but purchased the D50S and am loving it!!! Turning volume down instead of up now and the sound stage is bigger / fuller.. Just my opinion!!! I am happy now.. Haven't tested voltage out yet (no really a reason to) but am happy nonetheless..

For update purposes and the fact I have reached my goal... Sundara's, S.M.S.L SU-9, Monlith 887, utilizing full balanced DAC to Amp and out to Sundara's... Streaming Ipad mini.. The world of difference!! You guys spoke of turning passed 2 O'clock and not being able to stand it, With that setup I wasn't there. But now, holy moly??! Can turn it full volume and is clean and loud with ton's of headroom but only for a second, just to see what it will provide (It hurts).. Now I know what you meant by 2 O'clock.. Imagine, I started with a DragonFly Red.. lol

Because the iPad thinks it's in control of what you play. If you want your "data only" , by which you probably mean bit perfect playback, switch to a PC and use Wasapi Exclusive mode in the Tidal app out to your DAC or in general in player apps. You might be able to enforce bit-perfect mode in the iPad as well, perhaps others can help as I'm not an Apple user.

Does UAPP work on Apple products?
