Just play music like normal. Turn up the amplifier if needed. Music normally has much lower RMS level. So it's all good.

@Shanerr so, the dac is doing what it should, the ipad playing tidal is turned up full. Your powerful monolith 887 is too quiet for you in high gain driving what headphones? Beyer 250 ohm? Single ended?

yes 990, 250.. Not gonna say quit, but umph and headroom.. It sounds great.. out of the 6 pairs of cans these sounded the best, to me.. Even tried the 80ohm version, they sounded poop, to me at least.. No where near concert level, if I felt like abusing my head for a few minutes i'd like that..

And you're usually 2 o clock on the volume dial in high gain?

some tracks that show 192 I can go just below full. But yes usually around 2 or 3.. So lets say my source for music provided a peak of 1.5V, would I not hear a difference in Headroom and full transparency.. The Monolith by all means should be able to handle it.. Just feel the amp has to work too hard to get what is desired.

The OP thinks the DAC doesn't produce enough output for the amp, which is a reasonable concern that justifies a multimeter.

Yeah, I was sort of joking - point being if you're happy measuring the output with a meter you should be cool with sticking a pure tone in and not just music!

Stop worrying and enjoy the music. What you have is far better than good enough. If the IPad volume control has an effect keep it at max and disable all audio enhancements. Be on the lookout for resampling in iPad, such as when the sampling rate displayed on the DAC doesn't match that of the material you play.

Because the iPad thinks it's in control of what you play. If you want your "data only" , by which you probably mean bit perfect playback, switch to a PC and use Wasapi Exclusive mode in the Tidal app out to your DAC or in general in player apps. You might be able to enforce bit-perfect mode in the iPad as well, perhaps others can help as I'm not an Apple user.

It should not, the iPhone is the player and it's not a data provider for another player. Any player has a volume control.

Having "volume control" means there's still only digital data going from the computer to the dac. Volume control, in this regard, can change the values which represent your music to smaller or larger values. If you "turn down the volume", all that happens is your music player software (or OS or whatever is controlling volume) will make all numbers that represent your music, smaller. Turn volume up, and those numbers get bigger, maybe up to their maximum (2^16 in case of 44/16 data). There's no "analog" volume controlling going on.
Sorry if that was too basic for you, but maybe not.
