Since a DVD holds much more data than a music CD, I assume a DVD player would have higher specifications than a CD player, such as better reading performance, better error correction, etc. Does this mean that it would be more advantageous to use a DVD player to read a CD?

No, such rumors existed 25 years ago as well, and there's been no evidence to support them to this day.

User @NTTY has already tested several players here in the forum; just take a look at the reviews.
NTTY's CD/DVD/SACD Player Tests

In a nutshell, generally speaking, DVD players are:
- Slower to read TOC, skip tracks, FFW/REW
- Better at tracking (better resistance to scratched CDs)
- Likely to modify the bit stream from CDA if they have HDMI outputs
- less performing at their analogue outputs when compared with similarly priced CD players

Many modern CD players use DVD compatible drives even if they don’t read them.
