Dutch & Dutch 8c Review

Looks all good, I can’t seem to see a link? ‘Hongfeng’?
Keith

I'm using a MiniDSP SHD with my 8Cs, and due to the cable lengths required in my setup, I didn't have any success with passive SPDIF coax to AES conversion. The MiniDSP outputs at 96/24 and the signal would not make it reliably to the speakers. It'd work for a few minutes, then one or other other would drop out. I've used analogue XLR for the last year, but it's always mildly bugged me that there was an unnecessary D-A-D conversion step, even if it's most likely inaudible.

I looked for a long time, in vain, for any affordable and reputable active converter, and didn't find one. So I've eventually rolled the dice on this from AliExpress, because I saw it had a single review that said it worked at 96khz ! £14 wasn't much to risk, and I'm pleased to report that it seems to work fine. The only downside is about a 3dB loss in level compared to the high gain XLR input.

Sell the SHD and get the SHD Studio which has AES3 110 Ohm out.

It was this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006146006703.html

But there are various other things that look pretty similar too.
Thank you for this. I have the same problem with my 8C's. D&D support tried to help, going so far as to send me custom cables and terminator, but were not successful. This type of converter was the recommended next step but I couldn't find one for a reasonable price in USA (I already spent all my $ on 8C's ). In my case the issue only manifests playing bitrates higher than 24/48, which is a very easy thing to work around, but it would be nice to have the option again.

Almost done. Now to hide the cables.

Sometimes I get a little bummed that I don't have the funds for high end stuff like this, then I remember that great sound is really more a result of well executed integration of a speaker in a room, and you can get that at almost any price point if you know what you're doing. This one makes me feel a lot better about my setup.

Yes absolutely, in a completely treated room ‘most’ speakers can sound pretty good.
Contemporary active designs just make it easier to get really fine sound in largely untreated/domestic rooms.

Have you also tried the Neutrik NADIT BNC-MX? Price is approx. EUR 60. That does need a BNC connection, but coax SPDIF to BNC cables can be ordered at many places.
