Depends on the rest of your system, of course.

Obviously asking in relation to the software that works out the left and right speaker settings for the 8c's currently and if that same software will work on the 6c to get a 5.1 set without adding extra equipment.

If you can send it the L and R signal stream from a 5.1 source from which you can connect the D&D via AES/EBU, it will not care where it came from.
So, again, it depends on your 5.1 setup.
