Dutch & Dutch 15C Discussion

How much for its sound system?
To answer my own question, Tourbillon's sound system does not have a price as it uses the car's chassis as speakers(!) .
But a good index would be Chiron, which the 4 tweeters alone cost more than 40k euro.

Even if comparing them to cars makes some people smile or irritates a few ...I Still think it makes a lot of sense. Most of us know cars pretty well, and there are actually a lot of similarities with audio speakers: price, of course, but also build technology, model year, design, rarity, performance, intended use… and so on.
I am part of the few irritated ones. My main issue with car analogies is that they are done by people who know nothing about cars and proudly show it. :)

We should remind the price of a "Hi-fi" basic system.

  • For 300 euros, you can have a decent stereo system (monitoring or hifi)
  • For 1000-1500 euros, you can have a really good flat on / off axis stereo system like Neumann Kh120
  • At nearly 10000 you can have something like KH420 or Genelec 8361 wich clearly is already in the SOTA zone.
  • Above 10000 you pay more than 30 times what a decent hifi / monitoring setup can cost.

If we compare with car :
  • For 15000 euros you have a decent new car in France (Dacia Sandero)
  • For 40 k you have Tesla Model Y as a good, usable electric car even for long trip
  • For 150 k, you have a Porsche 911 Carrera S
The Dutch and Dutch 8 C price being 300 times what you have to pay for a decent stereo system, we are in the Bugatti Tourbillon zone. So, it's obviously an ultra luxury product.
Can you please give example of a decent stereo system for 300€? 600-700€ with used loudspeaker and amplifier maybe, but I have never seen for 300€

Me too.
And zero understanding of the influence of production quantities on actual costs gets people going on, and on, and on, about the price of low volume products too.

It is exasperating but just the inevitability of the prevalence of ultracrepidarians on the internet.

ultracrepidarians
Thanks for adding this new word to my vocabulary. Searching for it's origin allowed me to discover the existence of the Nobel disease, although it seems that most ultracrepidarians have yet to be awarded a Nobel price.

I know, right? It sometimes feels almost as if this isn't a car forum and is perhaps about some other, unrelated topic!

Anyway, I'm curious why car enthusiasts who think the readership here doesn't know crap about cars would then think it's a good idea to make car analogies all the time. Know your audience :)

And IRL too! Next time my elederly neighbor tries to engage a talk about the weather I'll require her degree in meteorology or be gone!

More seriously let's not be too extreme about it ultracrepidarianism is the base of shit chat and a lot of social interactions, if you know better fine just educate them and be gentle about it.

Recently I heard a "rule" that said if what you want to buy is 1% or less of your net worth, you can purchase it without worry. That would mean your net worth should be at least $13M to purchase this speaker. :)
can you provide a source for that "rule". In my 30 years of financial advice i have never heard it before and believe me, I thought i have heard them all.

I don't think that's financial advice. Is obviously a sales technique to anchor higher.

While like these better than the field coil speaker, have to say we can safely move beyond cars and (at $130K) we can shift to talk about housing instead! ;)

If my net worth was like this I would definitely buy this kind of speaker. :)

Unfortunately, it is the 0.01% rule, not 1%. So, the net worth needed is 100x higher than what Amir said in his post.
