Dutch & Dutch 15C Discussion

What's the price threshold at which a tool becomes a luxury product? 130k? 100k? 13k? 1.3k?
For psychological reasons I would say around 100k. xD

Given there's better available at a lesser price (like Genelec 8381A in this case).

PS: So I'd also consider, i.e., KEF Blade (I and 2) a luxury product, since the AsciLab C8C (+ BX8C) are better and much less expensive.

We should remind the price of a "Hi-fi" basic system.

  • For 300 euros, you can have a decent stereo system (monitoring or hifi)
  • For 1000-1500 euros, you can have a really good flat on / off axis stereo system like Neumann Kh120
  • At nearly 10000 you can have something like KH420 or Genelec 8361 wich clearly is already in the SOTA zone.
  • Above 10000 you pay more than 30 times what a decent hifi / monitoring setup can cost.

If we compare with car :
  • For 15000 euros you have a decent new car in France (Dacia Sandero)
  • For 40 k you have Tesla Model Y as a good, usable electric car even for long trip
  • For 150 k, you have a Porsche 911 Carrera S
The Dutch and Dutch 8 C price being 300 times what you have to pay for a decent stereo system, we are in the Bugatti Tourbillon zone. So, it's obviously an ultra luxury product.

Car analogy bingo!

I don't want to share a video, but Erin has a lot to say in his latest Axpona review video.

I’d no idea there were fan cooled. The fact that D&D think they need to be scares me.

Still, it’s an unlikely buy for me at present.

But they are my end speaker desire if all the rave is true.
There is a pristine pair for sale on this very forum!

Four-legged stands would suit them way better.

Stability wise there is no difference between a central pillar and a wide base compared with four legs - assuming the height is the same, the legs fit in the same footprint as the wide base and assuming everything joins together securely.

Agreed, for its own weight. But people tend to lean on speakers like that, its like they provoke such testing. You see it every where, let alone accidents, etc.

Leaning on it applies the pressure to the pillar and its joints, alone. The stable base underneath the pillar makes it even worst for the joints, the pillar essentially works as a lever to its joints.

Granted - hence my statement about everything joining together securely. But similarly if you lean against a 4 legged stand you put most of the stress on just two of the legs.

Agreed. I’d struggle buying a new pair of speakers for $13k let alone $130k - this would definitely change my retirement plans, therefore I’m not a target buyer for the 15c. I admire the amazing sound quality and the ambition from afar. The dynamics and spl is out of this world.

I’m not sure why there are attempts to rationalize anything at this level. Whether it be the 15c, Magico S7 or anything else at this stratosphere. I’m perfectly content with my 3 systems in my house, 2 of which can pressurize the room as much as I need it (not even close to even the 6c in my 2nd room). D&D doesn’t need idle critics, what they need are potential buyers :).

As an 8C owner I'm disappointed in the price. At $130,000 USD that's about 7-7.5 times the price of the 8C (including stands).

I can't wait to hear the Dacia Sandero of stereo systems!

Recently I heard a "rule" that said if what you want to buy is 1% or less of your net worth, you can purchase it without worry. That would mean your net worth should be at least $13M to purchase this speaker. :)

Even if comparing them to cars makes some people smile or irritates a few ...I Still think it makes a lot of sense. Most of us know cars pretty well, and there are actually a lot of similarities with audio speakers: price, of course, but also build technology, model year, design, rarity, performance, intended use… and so on.
