Dutch & Dutch 15C Discussion

If you look at it, there are a lot of systems that cost $200k and more. With these, you're getting the entire system (for the active crowd), so...looking at the 8c's and then looking at 15c's ...its what I expected. If I'm allowed to be on the earth 10 years from now, maybe I can cop some on the used market ;):)

I genuinely enjoyed the site more before Erin was banned.
So you got triggered, seeing a happy picture of me and Erin???

The best manager I ever had was the one that I worked for at Sony. He would always say he had one and only requirement for hiring people: "that they have common sense." That, you can't teach people. It has been a great lesson that I have followed through all of my career. At the risk of stating the obvious, you would be the kind that he/I would not hire.

Correcting your misstatement anyway, I unbanned Erin when he went through his difficult divorce a couple of years ago. He has chosen not to come back which is fine. Our relationship became 100% positive after the incident where he was being threatened with a lawsuit, and I stepped up to offer $10,000 for legal help. And then found him a member lawyer which got him out of the jam. I highly value the testing he does to bring objectivity into speaker reviews. You want to stir trouble and create friction, go elsewhere.

I don't see you donating to our cause. Hope you have to Erin's. If you have not, then excuse me for not caring what has hurt your feelings.

I suggest you stop bringing off-topic negativity to this forum. Heaven knows we all can do without that.

Why did they use external amps when the cabinets are so huge and could easily fit in there ?

Prototype. Or intentionally design. I personally don't like electronics integrated into the speakers, but I know some prefer it that way.

I can think of three or four possible reasons:

1. There really isn't any "spare" room in those enclosures. They are already as compact as they can be and still meet their performance goals.

2. Amplifiers need adequate cooling and that would not be easy to integrate into the enclosure when there is actually relatively little external surface area available.

3. If the amplifiers are internal and one of them fails, that speaker is unusable until the amplifier module has been repaired or replaced, and in the meantime the studio's main monitors are down. But if the amplifiers are external, swapping out the bad amp and swapping in a new good amp can probably be done in a few minutes, so there is very little down time.

4. It takes four men to lift those speakers. Add another eighty pounds of amplification (plus the weight of the additional enclosure size required) and now it takes five.

Reasons 2 and 3 alone should be enough to keep the electronics external of any speakers. It also makes upgrades effortless.

I know that the 8c uses active cooling, D&D said the fan is essentially inaudible, but what about the dust it collects? How often does that have to be clean?

I've never cleaned the actual fan blades because that would require taking quite a bit of the speaker apart.
About once a year for the last 4.5 years I've wiped the not much dust away from the air inlets.

I don't think my fans have ever even had to come on. And when I checked a few weeks ago, there wasn't even any dust on the area (the fans are underneath the speakers, so they won't gather dust unless they're pulling air in)

Good for you. I live in a HOT area, so the fans on mine presumably come on quite often even with air conditioning.

have you verified this? "presumably" is doing some heavy lifting. and fwiw I live in a place that is very hot and humid in the summer, 32-38c is pretty typical. I do keep my home a bit cooler than that though.

From memory, every time I've checked I found the fans to be on and the bottom of the speaker feels a bit warm but not hot to touch. I've never heard the fans in operation other than putting my ear close to them. I'm in a hot/humid climate too.

that's really interesting that yours are always on and mine are never on. that said, the bottom of my speakers do get warm to the touch, but not hot or anything.

I don't recollect ever managing to get the fan to turn on, having said that the UK is generally not that hot.

A donation will make you care?
You are really not nice to this person. I do not see a valid reason for it.

I've never checked to see whether the fans are on but have never noticed them. But my listening room is never warmer than 68°F or so....

Same here. No dust, never heard the fans come on... and I have been known to turn mine up to 11.

I’d no idea there were fan cooled. The fact that D&D think they need to be scares me.

Still, it’s an unlikely buy for me at present.

But they are my end speaker desire if all the rave is true.

Or think of it as being well engineered... adding the cooling that may be needed in few extreme cases.

I would have said the same thing a year ago.

But they are my end speaker desire if all the rave is true.
I can only speak to the 8c as I have not heard the 6c or the 15c, but the 8c speakers have exceeded my hopes and expectations.
